  3. Geo blocking is just a load of rubbish which would be nigh on impossible to introduce. The previous TAB management knew that so i'm not sure what if anything has changed. With VPN 's and mobile packages offering unlimited txts and minutes to Oz why pursue such a course of action. Better to cut costs at TAB which from accounts suggest that they went up 24% in first quarter ameliorating the record turnovers that occured.

  4. Throw common sense and logic out the window. Then ignore all races except group races basically. A horse could have won every race it had started in and broken every track record and paced a mile in 1-45 and won 200K but a maiden who had run third in a Group one would be considered a better credentialed horse as far as awards goes. FFS! No wonder the industry is in the state it is in.

  6. The Racing Post this morning carried a 12-page pullout advertising the new stallions for the forthcoming breeding season. Top of the list, as you might expect, is BAAEED, joint top rated horse in the world (140) who will stand at Shadwell's Nunnery Stud for £80,000. I suppose it's too much to hope he will be another GREEN DESERT but Shadwell will be hoping his progeny come to prominence later this decade. In Ireland, the top juvenile of last year BLACKBEARD is Coolmore's new arrival but he's going for 25,000 euros. He won the Middle Park on his final outing before a leg injury forced the end of his racing career. Ireland also has the Cox Plate winner STATE OF REST who was retired earlier in the autumn to stand at Rathbarry for 25,000 euros. The National Stud has the veteran stayer STRADIVARIUS who will stand for £12,500 and will no doubt be very popular with the jumping fraternity. In France, MISHRIFF stands for 20,000 euros at the Haras de Montfort et Preaux stud farm. In the middle and lower end there could be some real bargains - NAVAL CROWN stands at Kildangan for 15,000 euros and he'd be one who could be a possible shuttle stallion for Darley down to the antipodes.

  9. Doncaster look safe to race on Saturday and the ground is Good with, would you believe, even some watering. Three Grade 2 races which are billed as Northern Trials but the truth is the North are going to be lucky to get a winner at Cheltenham - the balance of power has long shifted to the southern stables and of course Ireland and we have the Dublin Racing Festival next weekend. Six go in the Lightning for the speed novice chasers over 3200m and the southern raider BOOTHILL is favourite against the Scottish raider TOMMY'S OSCAR but I'm far from convinced. TOMMY'S OSCAR was a decent hurdler and having run well on his first two chasing starts was unable to give SINCE DAY ONE 19 lbs at Newcastle three weeks ago. I think the winner is well handicapped and now TOMMY'S OSCAR gets a useful 5 lbs from BOOTHILL who won the Wayward Lad and his task was simplified by the departure of LAC DE CONSTANCE. Ten go in the River Don for the staying novice hurdlers over 4850m. I'm not sure the northern novices are that strong and both Paul Nicholls and irish trainer John McConnell have runners. STAY AWAY FAY represents Nicholls and has followed the traditional route of Irish point followed by English hurdle and he did both easily - literally, could be anything. GRAND SOIR has much stronger proven form having won at Cork and Thurles and we know decent ground won't be an issue. MAXIMILIAN is arguably the best of the home team and won well at Carlisle and Bangor and went to the Ballymore at Sandown as a serious contender but was well held in third behind HENRI THE SECOND. He's had wind surgery since and is back on some decent ground. This isn't easy to call at all - marginal preference (and it's only marginal) is for GRAND SOIR and at 5s is an each way bet to nothing. The Mares Hurdle over 3200m sees EPATANTE in at 2/7 - let's be honest, she's won a Champion Hurdle and is well ahead of these on all known form. Indeed, you could argue 2/7 is quite generous - being no match for CONSTITUTION HILL is no disgrace and in these much calmer waters, she should pick this lot up and carry them. No European interest in the Pegasus World Cup races at Gulfstream on Saturday evening (UK) though Frankie Dettori has rides in all three races. The feature Dirt race is worth only £1.5 million to the winner and the race has quickly lost some of its original lustre. With the retirement of FLIGHTLINE, American racing is looking for a new champion - in the absence of a champion, the Pegasus looks quite open and Breeders Cup Dirt Mile runner up CYBERKNIFE is favourite.

  10. Concerns over track conditions are global, it seems whether it's Trentham or Cheltenham. The latter are inspecting at noon tomorrow and the noises aren't overly confident with talk of a postponement to Sunday to give the track another 24 hours to thaw with parts still frozen. We've had the final declarations through for the nine-race card which features the rescheduled Grade 1 Clarence House over 3250m for the speed chasers. The clash between ENERGUMENE and EDWARDSTONE remains very much on and the two have four rivals. It does look a match on paper and with both horses championship winners over the course and distance it's not easy to choose between them. The ratings suggest ENERGUMENE who has a 6 lb advantage but the record of Irish horses in England this season counsels some caution and EDWARDSTONE could be the call. The Cotswold is the Gold Cup Trial, run over the 5050m of the Blue Riband trip. PROTEKTORAT is the best of the British chasers having won the Betfair last time. He was third in the 2022 Gold Cup and while it remains to be seen how he will compete with the likes of GALOPIN DES CHAMPS, he's the home leader and I think he wins this. NOBLE YEATS is a serious contender having won the National last year and it's good to see the Aintree hero mixing it at the top table. He was a decent winner of a Grade 2 over the park fences last time and on that he has claims but PROTEKTORAT is a Grade 1 winner and should be too good. The likes of FRODON, AHOY SENOR and SOUNDS RUSSIAN are all decent and the first named was third, albeit well held, in the King George. However, he's been well held over this trip on this track and I think SOUNDS RUSSIAN might outrun his odds but I'm with the favourite. Seven go in the Cleeve for the staying hurdlers over 4800m. There wasn't a dry eye in the house as PAISLEY PARK beat Goshen in the rescheduled Long Walk a Kempton on Boxing Day and in truth he should win this for all his quirks. GELINO BELLO swerved the Festival last year and won the Sefton at Aintree. His chasing career started well but he fell in the Kauto Star when looking held. He's got a lot on against the favourite. The most competitive of the Grade 2 races is the Ballymore for the intermediate novices over 4050m. Twelve go to post and this looks yet another clash between representatives of the Nicholls and Skelton yards and the fact Skelton was for many years Nicholls' Assistant Trainer adds a piquancy to these battles even if the two men are good friends. Skelton's runner is PEMBROKE who was due to run at Haydock last weekend - having finished seventh to subsequent Tolworth winner TAHMURAS on hurdling debut, they moved PEMBROKE up in trip and he's won by wide margins at Ludlow and Wetherby albeit in lesser events. He will be tested by the Nicholls runner HENRI THE SECOND who won the equivalent Grade 2 in the series at Sandown in early December. He does have to give PEMBROKE the 5 lb penalty. Cheltenham selections (and it's a bit boring because I think the favourites or second favourites are going to be hard to beat): 1.20: EDWARDSTONE (current price 2/1) 2.25: PROTEKTORAT (current price 13/8) 3.00: PAISLEY PARK (current price 5/4) 3.35: HENRI THE SECOND (current price 5/2) Four singles, six doubles, four trebles and a fourfold make 15 bets and it's called a "Lucky 15" up here so a 1-point win bet on those will be my Saturday selection.

    Jacinda Ardern

Scrapping super yes muldoon did that , pure politics (1975-1981, 42 years ago) BUT along came 1987 and it would have been completely wiped out , not so today financial intuitions are better prepared as was demonstrated by Key in the GFC , actually much worse the 1987 but better understood so a quicker recovery . As for backstabbers no doubt they are every where but you would go a long way to find another as deceitful and policy failed as ardern

  18. At Taranaki on the 18th November the track started off at 8. Following Race 1 it downgraded to 9, after Race 2 it downgraded to 10. As a consequence there were 4 late scratchings. I'd question the original penetrometer read despite rain. Had the read been accurate the expense for 4 sets of connections could have been avoided. The results say weather raining, Stipes Report says upgrade 10 to 9 after Race 1, then 9 to 8 after Race 3 at the Rangitikei meeting on 19th November. I don't have time to look for it now but, I have seen in a Stipes Report, can't remember which track, where the change in track conditions moved across 3 penetrometer rating bands. I don't see the point of putting up information if it is inaccurate.

    NZ TAB FIXED ODDS

This is correct. This no deductions (while I like using it) is crazy, it shows no understanding of how betting markets work. With all the scratchings, double and triple nominations its a landmine to price a market knowing that there is no protection from non runners.

    Wheres Nat?

Well the summer holidays have just finished so imagine she (Nat) would of visited her parents in sunny Queensland here for a week or three. Funnily enough her 2 sisters are missing in action here as well, with leading trainer Vicki Rasmussen disappearing off the training ranks during last year. ( all the horses now race in Shane Grahams name) and Kylie has not driven for quite some time as well, whereas she used to have heaps of drives. Conspiracy theories time could be anything , perhaps they are checking out the American scene , perhaps there's been an injury (hope not) Whatever the reason is the three Rasmussen girls are doing at the moment can only hope they are well and happy . They have all done an amazing job for the industry in both New Zealand and Australia. and Happy Australia Day too them and all

  25. They are leaders in having the highest percentages. With their Australian markets for tomorrow currently at 134% they are comfortably ahead of any other odds provider out there. Maybe better to cancel the no deductions thing and put up more honest prices.

  26. I have one big syndicate with many of the members having 1% share in the horse. These people go to the races, don’t care what each other’s percentage is and have a massive day, spending big money on both the tote and the bar. Why would the clubs not want each and every one of them there no matter what the percentage is? A lot of these guys with 1 % didn’t even follow racing two years ago but got in the game because of the fact mates were in the horse, they are now full time followers of the game and I’m sure in the future will be taking larger shares in horses… if they never got that experience as an ‘owner’ because they only had 1% I’m sure they wouldn’t be back for more.

I am surprised that no one has pointed out that Legarto suffered interference at the 450m and the offending jockey was given a 10-day suspension for careless riding.

    What A Ride

Speaking of rides, how about the stewards sending Damian Lane home with a $4,000 fine for whipping Ethereal Star one more time than permitted. I know the punishments are more severe in big races but 4k for one whip is crazy. "Welcome to NZ, but be sure to pay this before you leave again". Warren was also fined for a whip infringement after race one - a mere $150.

    Jacinda Ardern

Ardern was democratically elected as our PM. When the threat to her life becomes so great that she can't attend events because of the violence towards her and she figures it's not worth it, I really don't think that's a good thing for democracy. There's plenty of Prime Ministers and politicians I have disagreed with a lot over the years, I've never thought abusing, swearing at, and making threats towards them is acceptable as some seem to think it is today. Imagine if we all did that when we didn't agree with a politician or public figure.
