When logging onto Race Café this week there has been the article on Bruce Marsh retiring form training in Singapore and coming home to live. The article finished with this: But he can’t say “Marsh Out” just yet as it’s still business as usual until his last day at the office this Sunday. On Friday, he saddles two runners, Nova Factor and Assassin and two days later, seven runners will carry the Marsh name for one last time at Kranji, including stable favourite Supernova. “He is probably my favourite horse in recent years,” Marsh said. “He’s such a trier. He’s now 11 and he’s won 11 races, including his first race back in 2012, which means he’s been with me over half of my time here. I would just love to end on a winning note.” Well Supernova won R5 in Singapore tonight to give Bruce a wonderful sendoff (at $8.00FF ). Well done Bruce, you will be thrilled and it will be great having you back home.

  3. Trump to win again . '' Houthi rebels launched drone attacks on the world's largest oil processing facility in Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia and the major Khurais oil field on Saturday, sparking huge fires. OilPrice.com suggested oil prices could spike above US$100 (NZ$156) a barrel in the wake of the attacks when oil markets reopened, up from their current range of US$55 to US$61 a barrel. A barrel of oil equals about 159 litres, which means each sustained US$10-rise in the price of a barrel of oil could be expected to push up the price of petrol, diesel, jet fuel and other derivatives by an average of about 10 NZ cents a litre. '' Trump has made the USA self sufficient in oil and gas , he allowed fracking ensuring America is great again , this attack on the Saudis will have almost no impact on the USA and may be a bonus . China is dependent on oil imports just like we are so this development puts him in a very strong position when fighting the trade war with China . Lets see how this develops but if the Saudis can't get production up and running fairly quickly then Trump wins the trade war easily , China will be begging to do a deal . If he gets a deal with China then the Dems are even more stuffed than they are today .

  4. The question he posed that didn’t get answered, why have overhead costs gone up so much in a declining business? Normally suicide in any business.

Marsh goes out with a Supernova Big Bang Michael Lee 15/09/2019 Outgoing trainer Bruce Marsh could not have scripted his farewell meeting any better when he led in his favourite horse, old marvel Supernova, as his last Singapore winner on Sunday. The 69-year-old New Zealander has called a day on his 14-year-old stint at Kranji with the stable being handed over to his assistant-trainer Jason Ong from Monday. Already a successful trainer at his Woodville stables in New Zealand before he made the big move in 2005, Marsh carried on as the quiet achiever he has always been to go and reach the same lofty heights at Kranji, notably with two Emirates Singapore Derby wins - the first one, Hello And Goodbye, remarkably his very first winner at Kranji and Race Ahead the second one – and a Singapore Three-Year-Old Challenge clean sweep with Gingerbread Man, among others. Old marvel Supernova (Zy Nor Azman) just touches out Green Star (Syahir Abdul, obscured) to score a fairytale farewell win for trainer Bruce Marsh on Sunday. But that heart-stopping win by 11-year-old Supernova in a modest $50,000 Class 4 race over the Polytrack mile will undoubtedly rank highly among his long list of achievements in New Zealand and Kranji combined, or even Australia where the former jockey won the world-famous Melbourne Cup with Silver Knight in 1971. Just to see a host of his peers like Lee Freedman, Donna Logan, John O’Hara, Tan Kah Soon, Cliff Brown and even ex-trainer Brian Dean as well as owners like Mr Cheah Kim Teck, Mr Ong Boon Hin (Jason’s father), jockeys, syces, officials come down to celebrate with him and wish him well at the winner’s circle was a measure of how popular Marsh was among the close-knit Kranji racing fraternity. “I’m so pleased Supernova won my last race here. Zy (Nor Azman, his apprentice jockey) gave him a perfect 10-out-of-10 ride,” said Marsh who had wife Kay by his side. “I’ve never seen Zy so strong to the line. I’m over the moon. “This horse is my favourite at the stable. He’s got good clean legs, he’s a real ‘class’ horse. To do this when he is such an old horse is just amazing. “I’d like to thank all the owners who have supported me from Day 1 and my marvellous staff, too.” Freedman, who has struck a great friendship with Marsh since he arrived in Singapore in September 2017, was rapt to see his Kiwi mate go out on a winning note. “It’s fantastic for Bruce to do it with an old horse who’s 11. It couldn’t get any better than this,” said the Singapore champion trainer. “Is he in for a great night? I would imagine a fair bit, but I hope mine just gets better!” It actually did two races later when the Australian saddled his first winner in even-money favourite Muraahib, but the Australian went one step further by calling Marsh’s win even more fulfilling. “I’m happy I won, but to be honest, I’m happier to see Bruce win with Supernova. He’s a good mate and it couldn’t have ended any better than that,” he said. (From left) Trainer Lee Freedman, Mr Cheah Kim Teck, one unidentified friend, Freedman's partner Jo Johnson, Bruce and Kay Marsh, ex- Kranji trainer Brian Dean, owner Mr Ong Boon Hin, Mr Tan Teck Seng (TTS Stable) and newly-licensed trainer Jason Ong join in for a souvenir photo along with Marsh's pet horse and final Singapore winner Supernova and apprentice jockey Zy Nor Azman. While it was written in the skies Supernova would be the 417th and last bright shining star among Marsh’s constellation of winners at Kranji, it was also fitting it was supplied by his long-serving protégé Zy. “That’s the least I could do for my boss. He has always been supportive and also sent me to New Zealand (for further training),” said the Singaporean rider. “To do it for him, have his favourite horse win on the line, I’m just so honoured to be the jockey to do that for him, for the horse. “I gave it my all inside the last 200m. Even Supernova was giving his best. “In the last 50m, I was like ‘come on, boy, get there, get there’ and he got there. I’m very happy.” Supernova ($35) always had leader Green Star (Syahir Abdul) in his sights, staying within whiffing distance and all poised to strike for that dream finale for his trainer. In the home straight, it was heading towards a two-horse race with the other 10 runners struggling to make ground from the rear. Green Star, however, kicked clear and for a fleeting second, it looked like Marsh would have to rely on his last three runners (Dreamer Legend, Blitz Power and Uncle Lucky) for that fairytale ending. But Zy threw everything at the 11-year-old bar the sink. It was almost like time had come to a standstill with that invisible bond between horse and trainer playing out in slow motion. Supernova might have been at an age when many of his peers would be put to pasture, but here he was at that epic defining moment, digging deep into his entrails and reserve tank like a three-year-old, pumping every blood from his arteries through that big heart of his for only one man. The margin slowly but surely got worn down with both horses lunging at the line locked together. It was the stuff of legends in the making. Kranji held its breath - and to the explosion of joy felt across the grandstand and beyond (definitely in New Zealand where our races are watched ‘live’ every week), the racing Gods have smiled on Supernova - and for one last time on his trainer, Rangi Bruce Marsh.

  10. Thanks for upload Baz as not working on NZTR site . I think the authorities need to clamp down a bit on the whip and do not agree at all with unlimited from 100 mark . Unlimited thrashings not a great sounding rule . However imho you are bang on money here , this jocks been harshly treated .I reckon he's just kept that horse up to work , couple cracks and hands and heels , I suppose the couple after long look round has done him. If he don't look round iam not sure he would have been done . The windmill action by Guy Fox rider looked way worse . Cole should appeal, but I suppose cost will out weigh fine so catch 22. Didn't watch any racing yesterday but the ground look gluggy so assuming they were stopping pretty quickly Whip will be gone inside a decade anyway .

  12. From what I could see...the whip was only used 4-5 times the whole length of the straight? I'd like to show/paste the link to this race only but the video strangely enough doesn't work at NZ Racing web-site...a cover up? Maybe they should be FINED $500 for incompetence?

  13. NZ signed a IFHA agreement on whip use with number of points , use on horse clearly winning or has achieved maximum placing one of the points .Not sure if rule came in after that . Some opt out examples are USA , they didnt want to ban use of whip above shoulder height , it looks bloody awful there at times, some real disgusting beltings . Ryan Moore got pinged by same rule a few weeks back at York when lengths clear and got a ban.Tough one though as cannot expect jock to watch big screen , start looking round and get caught on line they are in shit . I suppose the clearly part is reason not many get done for it .

So much needing to be fixed, so start with the easy and the embarrassingly obvious. A movable or temporary winning post at Ruakaka surely seems reasonably inexpensive, doesn't have to be super flash, just effective. Does no-one uphold national standards in NZ Racing, OK what about broadcasting standards?? Owners and punters deserve better, jockeys too. How can we run any race let alone a stakes race with no winning post?

Was bit of a fan of night at dog's in the old country . love the term dishlickers though , must be OZ and NZ term. Scurlough Champ and Ballyregan Bob brought thousands to tracks . On subject of posts , Sandown UK and Longchamp have two so they might have spares , it's a pain in arse as if your horse leading it always seems to be the second post , its flying at the death it's bloody always the first post .

Have they ever had a finish post there? Like a proper, old school horse shoe style type? Addington did once, then when the dishlickers were brought in at the venue, it was ditched in favour of small plastic marker peg. I can only assume this was done because the greyhounds needed something to take a leak on.

    The Cups 2019 (aus)

Those three races before Arc were small fields but class , Beaten by Brundtland in an Arc trial but Bruntdtland was talked of being the star stayer for Godolphin this year but had fatal injury at Meydan start season unfortunately. Split Kew Gardens and Dee Ex Bee in another of the three races, Dee Ex Bee is now second best stayer in UK and KG toppy in Cup and Neufbosc finished in front of Ispolini in the other of the three races so form all there . I reckon judge him when he hits 2000 plus . Donny Cup tonight will be cracker Stradivarius v Dee Ex Bee again , dare I say it but Sneaky Getaway I will follow with added interest in it .6 year old , debut this year in arse end of winter bumper at Thurles were good old Vintage Crop kicked off his jumps career in a bumper on debut .Vintage Crop won but Sneaky Getaway somehow unseated on the flat there , won next couple at Clonmel and Cork so he's handy and Mullins connection too.. Now mixing it with best stayers. Gets 5lbs from Stradivarius. I can see him finishing in front of Max Dynamite .

  25. Question for Dean There are various platforms available in the communication world today. But the TAB have closed the door on the phone punters and the small bettors that had an interest, and also closed the various TAB sites and agencies around the country, therefore leading to the closure of the 4 to 5 hours of churn betting that such platforms generated. Can we expect to see a return of phone betting and less closures of TAB outlets to facilitate the 20% of betting that was lost as a result of such closures? The average age of a racing bettor is increasing and that age is not a reflection of the latest communication platforms available in NZ. There could be an increase of up to 10% betting available if they understand markets and customers!! John John Clydesdale The decision to move away from phone betting was taken in 2016. Like other industries, TAB customers were increasingly shifting online. At the time, more than 70% of customers over 65 were using online channels and very few new customers were using the Phonebet service. The TAB has continued to provide touchtone betting and a phone service for medically restricted customers. As we look to increase distributions to industry we have to be very conscious of our spend as well as what our customers want. Returning to phonebet is not an investment we are looking to make. The retail network remains a very important part of the TAB offering . However, given the ongoing migration of customers to other channels, we are constantly reviewing our network to ensure it’s fit for purpose and commercially viable. We have more than 500 TAB outlets around the country and we continue to invest in our branches to improve the customer experience. But it’s also a very costly part of our business so we need to continue to be mindful of driving efficiencies where we can, including through our online offering.

  26. 1. What is the forecasted (projected) total cost of running NZ Racing for the next three years? 2. Are there any plans to be put in place for a “real” reduction in running costs over this period? 3. If there is a planned reduction in running costs, what is it in percentage terms and what does that translate into real $ savings over this period? 4. If the answer to Q2 is a YES, what plans are in place for the future use of the savings? (Eg, debt reduction, improved infrastructure etc). 5. If the answer to Q2 is NO, can you give an explanation as to why you don’t believe it’s neither necessary nor beneficial? Trump (1) RITA doesn’t have visibility of the Code’s future costs but if we look at their most recent reports we know NZTR operating expenses were in the region of $9m, HRNZ approximately $4m and $5m for GRNZ. For the same period, the former NZRB’s operating expenses were $144m, with the total at $162m. I can’t speak for the Codes but I expect RITA’s expenses to be less on a consolidated basis. (2) There is an absolute commitment from the RITA board to achieve real reductions in running costs going forward, as outlined by the Minister in his Letter of Expectation. (3) We have not focused on a targeted % number at this point but instead have a strategy of examining all parts of the business to ensure any available savings, that doesn'tcompromise performance, can be made and drop to the bottom line. (4) Given the fact the industry has been living beyond its means the last couple of years, our first focus has been to at least maintain industry funding (per the Ministers Letter of Expectation) and then look to pass the new revenue streams created through the reform process and relevant cost savings onto the codes once this base is secure. Debt repayment is most definitely something that also needs to be considered in the short to medium term, obviously balanced against the need to kick start the industry through getting these funds flowing back to stakeholders, a demanding balance to strike.

  27. i'm sorry, didn't realise it was a requirement here that one has to 'label a horse yourself' in order to have a valid opinion. Fact is, CT, you got carried away labelling an over-rated 'superstar' that didn't meet your lofty expectations....and just for the record, here' a previous post of mine prior to post-time! Posted May 15 Bet of the Day Ruakaka R8 #4 Memories Only Dropping back in grade to R72 after 3 recent runs in R82. Gets a 3kg claim from apprentice Goindasamy. Handy enough draw (5 of 12), prefers Good-Dead tracks (should be a Dead4, weather fine), and has been placed twice at Ruakaka. Just needs to settle as MO can be a fierce 'puller'. Two starts ago finished 2nd behind Marzemino at Ellerslie in a R82 - good form for this. FF $8.50 and $2.80 is great value in an ordinary field.

  28. The three races at Riccarton were the CJC Stewards Handicap (1200m), the CJC Canterbury Gold Cup (2000m) and the CJC Stewards Handicap (1600m). Bob Skelton did not ride Good Lord to beat Show Gate in the 1977 Wellington Cup, it was Bruce Compton. Bruce gave Good Lord a beautiful run in the trail and took over at the 300m. Show Gate was standing him up 30 lengths after Chris Ramage dropped her out last in the running (and pulling). Ramage then took her very wide in the straight and she made up a huge amount of ground with Ramage dropping his whip along the way and she failed to catch Good Lord by three quarters of a length. Ramage slapping her on the off side neck and the reins on the near side loose and flapping. Incidentally Good Lord was fifteenth favourite that day. The Apprentice has in the past been lacking in knowledge of racing history and I will give him the benefit of doubt with this champion mare. Perhaps some of the postings about the exploits of the mare will enlighten him as to why she was included. The 1970's was arguably the greatest period of racing in NZ with a host of top line gallopers racing in that period so for Show Gate to named NZ Horse of the Year twice 74/75 and 76/77 is surely testament to an extraordinary mare. Grey Way was racing then, Balmerino, Battle Heights, Copper Belt, March Legend, La Mer etc etc. Speaking of La Mer, in Mark Taylor's book Century Of Champions this sentence was included "Successful over 1200m to 2400m, La Mer annexed 17 Group races and commands a place alongside Show Gate, Horlicks and Sunline as one of New Zealand's finest race mares since the Second World War. Show Gate was a household name and she has streets with her name honouring her, rooms and even a Show Gate building at Riccarton where she is buried on the course. Group racing did not start in NZ until August 1977 and two years later began in Australia. I note the original poster has not responded again and perhaps he has realised his mistake and I trust you also take time The Apprentice to digest what has been said about an iconic horse. Give Bob Skelton a call or Bruce Marsh who won the 1974 Telegraph Handicap on her and ask them. I can guarantee what their response would be.
