  1. If you own a horse, and lease part of it to a trainer, why would you even charge grazing on the horse when it is sent home either permanently or with the intention of going back to the trainer. Seems very tight-assed.

  2. I can't believe the tosser had the stupidity to bring the matter to a public forum and then attempt such an action. Obviously he couldn't care less about his horse, what a bloody shame she will have to return to his ownership eventually. No doubt the RIU are being their normal pro-active selves.

  3. If ever any evidence was needed to prove that the current ratings system is flawed you only need to take a look at the just completed 7th at Waimate today. A race programmed for Rating 40 - 50 horses - so theoretically, up to 10 points inferior to unraced maidens! Yet the field is made up of 13 race winners (not sure of the specific race conditions, maybe non-winners were excluded), who had won 49 races between them and close to half a million in stakemoney! I understood that this ratings system was supposed to match like with like, yet all we seem to have is a system that crams everybody into the lowest class race possible. No wonder as Eljay pointed out in another thread, 48 horses left the country last month, with 40 or more of them permanently. The way this rating system is being implemented has made for a worse handicapping system that the disaster it replaced!

  4. I think the damage has been done over the ensuing years, and lay the blame completely at the feet of the racing board, with no vision and no long term viable plan to increase stakes and encourage people to breed a horse. I have mates that would rather buy a boat or jet ski and get their fun that way , after you present the costs involved and returns once you present them to train a horse. Less horses bred = smaller fields = less betting = lower turnover = less distributions = lower stakes.

  7. I struggle with handicapper discretion! The points Shillelagh accrued or had deducted over a month is a classic example: 1st at Manawatu (12/02) - 6 points added (discretion applied) = 82 4th at Manawatu (14/02) - no change = 82 8th at Auckland (01/03) - drops 2 points (discretion applied) = 80 6th at Manawatu (12/03) - drops 3 points (discretion applied) = 77 6th at Manawatu (14/03) - drops 3 points (discretion applied) = 74 The last two 6th's are only one placing away from losing no points at all ..... so why deduct 3 when all of those finishing further back only lost 1 point - and this in fields of 8 and 10 runners respectively? Great for connections as gets their horse back down to a competitive rating level quicker, but the only justification I can see in increasing a horses rating by 6 points and then decreasing it by 8 points within a month is to keep it eligible for racing at Manawatu. How is that a true rating system?

  8. Trouble is blind Freddy don't get a say .do we needhandicappers . U could do the job in 5 minutes. i want handicappers who handicap not people who just need to add and subtract small numbers.

  9. You're dead right Tim. Simply logic tells you that you have to have more horses progressing through the system than you have going backwards or you'll eventually end up with a dirty great big heap at the bottom - which is what we have now. Using todays Waimate meeting as an example of a typical country program - 109 of the 164 acceptors were rated between 40 - 50. The problem with the points distribution is there for blind Freddy to see!

  10. Horses have been exported forever. Nothing wrong with that if the money reinvested.with the current stakes there is no reason not to.will it be is the question.we export food 8f we get good prices then we grow more.same as horses.i don't know if we are growing enough that might be the problem. the original argument I think still stands.average horse can earn decent money at the park.it mighty cover cost but it never has.personally I'm happy to race every week and sooner or later most horses will get a shot at the gold when they find a suitable race.dunno if you can ask anymore.

  12. Two things Tim. How are the new stakes been funded, even allowing for less races, and if the proverbial hits the fan re the buildings, what happens next? Are the Board playing the long game or looking for short term glory? Secondly, now that you're back in the tent ....

  13. This situation had me reviewing my current leases. I have never considered the expiry date to be absolute ie early termination of a dud or injured horse has always been a possible outcome. My leases include the following terms (and they weren't written by a lawyer) 2.0 TERM OF LEASE 2.1 The Lease will commence on 1 March 2017 and continue for a period of five years terminating on 28 February 2022 unless terminated earlier. 10.0 TERMINATION PROVISIONS 10.2 The Lessee may terminate this agreement at any time upon giving 14 days’ notice in writing to the Owner. Upon termination of this agreement for any reason, the Lessee shall, within 7 days of the termination or prior to the horse next racing (whichever is the earlier) advise NZTR of such cancellaion. My understanding is that this supports industry practice. These things are always best to be understood from the outset. In the absence of clarity, the right thing to do should outweigh the legal position.

    race 6 eagle farm

The race delay was long after the TAB cocked up. They stuffed something up at least 30 min before the original scheduled start time. Still I suppose you have to expect one teething problem in a $79m computer project.

  16. Everton

    Canterbury Starter

I mentioned some years ago that I was struggling to see what value he added as a starter, things quite often are a shambles, and I was convinced that that big scream of riiiiight would scare some horses into breaking. I see he has toned that down somewhat, but if you bet on races where he is the starter, you always find yourself holding your breath at the start because you have the extra worry of not just whether your horse is going to go, but also whether the starter is going to cause chaos.
