    • Rob 75 yes stopped because of security issues. Officials were worried about a possible robbery on course. Peter Moran was actually a Te Aroha owner-trainer before he struck the big Matamata jackpot. He bought Panzer Chief off the Matamata Ward family and placed him with John Revell in Te Aroha- the rest is history.
    • Will keep that in mind.  Horse finished in 9th place, now with the new place options available, if you punted it for first 8, you would be a little peeved.  Officials should remind jockeys of riding horses out, its not a good look.
    • Good question Rob75. A good many here will have the answers. I can remember them but was a bit young and besides lived outside the jackpot tracks. They were certainly a draw card and attracted very large crowds. If I recall syndicates got many of them. I had a TAB buddy years back, two or three generations older than me who was part of a winning syndicate. Bought his first house with the winnings, Williamson Ave, Grey Lynn no less. When Auckland house prices were not what they are today but back then still a pretty penny. Also recall some of the legends. Peter Moran. I think he won it outright and then became an owner. Piako was one of his I think. Then there was the controversial one at Te Awamutu. The horse first across the line was relegated but the jackpot rules did not evidently recognize official relations and the pot went to court. Not sure how that went. My memory tells me the pot was paid out to the first horse across the line. Maybe that was one reason why they ended. Too much room for legal challenge. If I recall they were set up by the clubs themselves independent from the TAB so weren't fully alligned with the then existing judicial protocols. Or simply not watertight in the way the way the jackpots were written.  They were certainly the days. Very big payouts. And big crowds.
