    • Winston Peters says the TAB/Entain deal appears ‘too good to be true’ Whakaata Māori 1 Jun, 2023 06:49 AM2 mins to read   TAB deal with UK betting company Entain doesn't add up for Winston Peters. Photo / Whakaata Māori New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says the TAB deal with UK betting company Entain doesn’t stack up. The 25-year partnership will reverse falling revenues for racing and deliver at least $900 million in guaranteed funding for the industry over the next five years – at no cost to the taxpayer. But the former racing minister is not convinced. “What you’ve got is the statements being made that it’s all great and all good but we are losing control of a critical part of the industry, namely the TAB, and we will do for 25 years,” Peters says. “The real question is: has this company lost all its mojo? Why can’t we do these things ourselves like we used to do in so many other areas and used to do here as well?”     New Zealand First leader Winston Peters adds his view on the sale of the TAB to a UK company. Photo / Alex Burton Aside from the funding, $10 million will go towards in sponsorship for racing carnivals, a TAB rebrand, updated facilities, and two-year employment guarantees for all workers. It comes as a 2018 review recommended the need for a strategic partnership or the TAB would fall over within three years, according to the Government. Yet Peters says it’s “too good to be true”. “There’s a lot of questions here which, on a blackboard, there are people sitting down who don’t know what they’re talking about, needs to be analysed out before we come to a conclusion. That’s what’s not to like.”
    • But he elected to give up his license because he stated he could not afford to pay the fine. I have no doubt his kennels would be well built and up to code.
    • Interesting, I have often wondered what the figures were, of course you have to take into account that the NI has 77% of the population, so if they are only contributing 49% of turnover then they are significantly under performing given the HRNZ funding directed North.
    • Thats never been the rules. In the past, I have stayed in places with people that dont have registered properties to race greyhounds on. I do know Fergusons kennels are well built so I doubt thered be any issues here.
    • Re read the decision. He never lost his license. The fine was suspended for a year. And he discloses in the case he was going to re apply for his license. Penalty The penalty is one of a fine of $1,500. $500 of this fine is suspended for a period of 12 months from the date of this Decision, pursuant to r 174(3), on the condition that the Respondent does not commit any further breach of the Rules of GRNZ within that period, other than a minor Raceday incident dealt with under the Minor Infringement Scheme, in which case the total fine will immediately become payable.
    • You are off the mark, suggesting that my bias towards Trentham, is the reason for my liking of the drone shots. If they had had a drone following them over the Ellerslie Hill how good would that have been?
    • Eliminated horses , well only 2 races have 6 balloted in the split races  others have 5 or less so a few may have been eliminated but from those two races but the rest will have no eliminations . It's will be interesting to see how this all pans out on race day.
    • Idoit. The greatest idiot in all its forms, the idoit.
    • There was some interesting data presented at the HRNZ Roadshows in May. 49% of turnover on harness racing is generated by NI punters, and while they do bet more on NI races than punters from other regions combined (15% vs 8% of turnover), they punt on greater Canterbury meetings at similar levels as the locals (24% vs 26% of turnover) and at double the level as locals in the lower South (10 vs 5%). If we want grow turnover nationwide, our industry must support racing in the North to keep existing punters involved and interested and attract potential new entrants to all aspects of our sport.
    • Wasn't Ashburton 8 races originally then that Pearls series added made it 9 and they've ended up with 10 ?
