nomates the other two Waipukurau dates are February 15 and April 26. Totally agree about Foxton. With the Awapuni track on life support let's hope NZTR see the merit in reinstating racing at Foxton as well.

Hopefully Foxton next . For the good of the industry and the CD in particular they need to bury their pride and do what's best for racing . Small steps , small steps .

Great news. NZTR has deigned to give Waipukurau three race dates on their track in the new season. The first on Sunday November 16th.

You may have all seen this before but it is worth watching again

HRNZ have progressively changed the rules since Next Gen was introduced, now, any Stallions progeny from the "sales" is eligible if you round up a couple of younger people for the ownership group. The whole concept has changed, they have now turned it into another "sales" race series, but paid for by the Industry rather than the buyers of the horses. Yesterdays HRNZ news had the ra ra ra hype, of the Whitelock's $110,000 Captaintreacherous filly being made eligible for Next Gen, by the addition of their four sons to the ownership. Captain Treacherous had his first runners in NZ in 2020, so would not have been Next Gen eligible under the original rules.

Because it would drain better then the puggy mess Awapuni becomes in winter, and because it wouldn't compact and harden like the clay-based soil does in summer. Coastal Foxton is held up as the perfect surface (even naturally, without the "help" of turf experts), so turning the soil profile at Awapuni from swampland to coastal by chucking in a bunch of sand makes sense. Who was involved in removing racing from Foxton and Levin and is still in charge of NZTR? It wasn't Ballesty's decision, so why can't he "come up with" the great idea to return racing to these tracks? He wouldn't be admitting he was wrong; he'd be shitting on his predecessors (which is fine because they largely deserve to be shat upon) and giving the people what they want. In a time when NZTR is lurching from one cock-up to another it seems like an easy win for him. -
You had better get in early for a pie otherwise, guess who, will eat them all

One of my trips over to The Cox Plate in the early 2000s, I came across an elderly man in his 80s wearing an old suit from the 1950s and with large binoculars around his neck. I started chatting with him and he told me that he had been to nearly every Cox Plate for the previous 40 years. The race book had previous winners of The Cox Plate going back through the decades, so I asked him about all of the past winners from the 60s and 70s. When we got to Daryl's Joy, he told me that his win in the Cox Plate was not the most memorable, it was when Darryl's Joy beat Vain in a sprint race in early spring 1969. Vain was seen as a Champion as he was undefeated winning the major two-year-old races the season before. A capacity crowd turned out to watch Vain win, he was at 10 to 1 on. Vain was duly beaten by Daryl's Joy and he noted that the 40k in attendance were stunned into silence. It was like everyone had turned up for a funeral.

They have the same takeout rates on tote win and place. Maybe they do worse on fixed odds place than on FO win, but I doubt it. So I don't think there are financial motivations. The more likely explanation is that Aussies don't bet the place and hardly ever bet each way - historically Aussie punters have been all about win bets and quaddies while Kiwi punters have been about each way/place, doubles, and Pick 6 - so our new Aussie overlords don't see the point in cluttering up the screen with place prices. -
