Hastings cancelled

Recommended Posts

Its Wednesday now and we haven't heard anyone say hey we made a mistake at got it wrong and in the future this is how we will deal with the watering issue. The track would of been firm without water but nothing like a Woodville or Wanganui in the middle of a dry summer. The problem is probably what a lot of the old boys wifes complain about on here....( just a little dribble and far to late to help make a happy playing field).

Listening to John jenkins (trackwork reporter at Hastings) on the radio this afternoon he said the talk of the trainers at the track yesterday morning was that that irrigation should have been done earlier ie: starting the weekend beforehand. Confirmed my opinion on the matter.

We now await the official report due out later this week.  .

I listened to Purcell today talk to Peter Earley. Gee Purcell is hard to follow, not very articulate. It was like he had a written statement prepared and was reading it out.

He talked about reviews, systems, procedures, bla, bla, bla. Also they have hired  turf experts and Bell Gulley to give reports so there's a further truck load of cash down the drain.

Don't worry can't see the track getting watered next week as there's been at least 100ml of rain in Hastings since Sunday and at least another two days of continious on the way. Surrounding hills  have rivers running off them last time we had rain of this quantity was approx couple years ago.

As an aside, I wonder how some of the big Aussie clubs like Rosehill, Randwick, Caulfield etc etc would have handled the Hastings situation???

I bet every attempt would have been made to let the meeting proceed.

As another aside, if the concerns over the track being shifty were only restricted to a section on the rail by the 800m(even to the home turn), could they not have put a false rail up, of would that have made the final bend too tight

Or shifted the rail back to true.

Hawke's Bay Racing Press Release Thu, 24 Sep 2015

Hawke's Bay Racing has made the following press release with regard to last Saturday's Windsor Park Plate raceday.

The abandonment of racing at Hawke's Bay on Windsor Park Plate Day was obviously a disaster for everyone involved in the day.

It was certainly not caused by an Act of God and so Hawke's Bay Racing must take its share of the blame. We have full confidence in Richard Fenwick our Track Manager, who gets his preparation absolutely correct 99 times out of a 100.

It's not an exact science.  Spring weather, especially in an El Nino year, is unpredictable.  However, it's very easy to understand irate owners and trainers in this unfortunate (and expensive) situation.

HB Racing GM Andrew Castles, with the full support of our Board, has called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.

It seems most likely this will be taken in two parts. Firstly, what could the club have done to ensure a safer racing surface, and secondly, were the correct procedures followed by the RIU stipendiary stewards who officiated on the day, and were all possible steps taken before the decision was made to abandon the meeting after Race 3.

Clearly these circumstances create mistrust and a lack of confidence in our industry, which we can ill afford.  It's very pleasing to see these matters are being addressed by NZTR as a matter of urgency, with an independent review due by Friday 2nd October.

We're now looking forward to the end of this major rain event in Hawke's Bay that has so far dumped 120 mls on the track and allayed fears of an early drought. The forecast is for a much better week leading into Livamol Day on the 3rd October.

Mick Ormond – Chairman Hawke's Bay Racing
