Group races shouldn’t have pref draws, group races are what people strive to get horses in and then to penalise  the better ones with bad draws is a disgrace an also gives some horses and advantage to gain the important black type status

I think I should clarify something for you Legend. You are suggesting the first three home all made money for their connections and the slotholders, and perhaps the fouth stake should be boosted so they break even as well. That isn't correct. Only the winner showed a profit for both the horse's connections and the slotholder. This is something I wrote elsewhere. No one has suggested it is incorrect. Do let me know if I have got anything wrong.
The winner got $340,000, after deductions for trainer and driver.  So roughly $170,000 each for the slot holder and connections, assuming it was a 50/50 split, although since it was the hot fav if I was the connections I would probably have asked for a 70/30 split. But assuming it was 50/50 the slot holder made a $95,000 profit for their investment. About a 120% return on their investment, so good work if you can get it.
After deductions the second placegetter ended up with $106,250; $53,125 each for slot holder and connections. Slotholder only lost $21,875. Better luck next year.
Third placegetter $36,125 for each of slotholder and connections. So slot holder lost $38,875. And so it goes as we go down to the also rans where the slot holders lost about $50,000 each.
In what way does this make any sort of business sense for the slot holders? Only one of the 10 of them had any chance of showing a profit, and if this year's winning slot holder doesn't have a horse run in the first two for either of the next two years they will end up losing money overall.
It was also interesting that the All Stars didn't purchase a slot. You would have thought they had every chance of winning the race and ending up with all the winning stake. Perhaps they thought it was a bad business proposition.
For the connections of the winner and placegetters it was basically the same as racing in a $300,000 race.
As I say, I'm not a big trotting follower these days, and I wouldn't have known the race even existed if I hadn't looked on here, and I may be missing something totally, but I just don't get the business sense in all this. Why would 10 groups of people invest in a something that they were 90% guaranteed to lose money.

Look at the fields for this Friday.
I know it's been mentioned ad nauseum but this pain has to stop .
8,7,11,8,7,9,6,7 field sizes !!  For Alexandra Park. Never in my 60 years have I seen a constant debacle.
It is a slow motion car crash.
Good on the owners for trying to pick up some cash in 6 and 7 horse fields but this programme is just a farkn disgrace .
Too late for heads to roll , if they haven't gone by now they never will.
I love my Harness Racing but this is a diabolical disgrace.
How can Alex Park remain a viable option.
    It can't !
    It's a gonner , 3/1 on favourite to be gone by 2025.
I am Gob Smacked, Gutted and Appalled at the state of Racing at the HQ of Harness Racing in the North.

What’s the point of winning a race to end up in a higher grade and race for the same money, you’d be better off trying to run places and picking up easier money staying in the garde below

I see they have carded a pace up to R45 for $9k and a pace up to R65 for $9k.                No wonder owners are selling their higher rated horses.       Can we please stop this nonsense.    The Up to R45 should be $7k and the up to 65 $11k.

You’ve answered your own question Iraklis. The Race was devised by an ‘architectural’ group which the CEO obviously oversees, it didn’t come from the Cambridge Club.
Whether it was Cambridge, Metro or Auckland it was always going to happen. The CEO should of identified that he was going to have a horse or horses eligible for it and should stand down from either the group or ownership.
There have been a few murmurings regarding the open class 5 horse field that was allowed to race a couple of weeks ago, that the CEO has to okay, and that he had a share in one of the horses. Should that have happened? I don’t know but these sort of things need to be transparent and arms length decisions for integrity.

Was a good sales with a very good average but compared to the average stakes the  horses will race for  probably abit over priced for 90% of them

The low noms at Auckland this week signal bigger problems over winter. Is it about time that apart from 2yo races, in run-of-the-mill meetings pacers are treated like the trotters: noms for maidens and the rest split according to ratings? Then mix types of races and hcps up for both gaits e.g. hcp 2700 stand one week then the next 2200 mobiles with prefential draw based on money won in last 4 starts. It would mix up who were the favorites.

Sorry to spout the facts Martin, your the one who sees nothing wrong with the sport whilst it implodes dues to impropriety at many levels. Defend that if you like and make a bigger dick of yourself or take your head out of the sand and observe what many see

The latest is that some senior management and directors have given themselves large bonuses/consultancy fees since the end of their last financial year?  How could this be true when they've just admitted to an ever increasing $100 million debt !

The drive on hot favourite Caulfield (Race 4) left a lot to be desired! David Butcher showed little vigour at all when they started coming wide out (his son Ben nabbed him on 31-1 shot  Letsgodancing). Just a half-hearted flick of the wrists when the other horse has the momentum was not a good look.

Auckland is the author of its own demise when it comes to retaining 'faster' horses. As an owner of multiple R70+ horses that have raced at Auckland over the years,  we are disillusioned by how good middle grade horses are used as fodder. We are perfectly happy to enter FFA feature races so the champs can win good money and we just get appearance money (and losing a rating point). But what annoys us is that  'normal' races for our current R71 trotter at Auckland are always handicaps with a max back mark that is a gift for the same champs again and again.  At least our boy is usually off the front and gets minor placings, so is paying his way. Those just below the champs run top races for little reward and end up on a one way trip to Aussie. And the pacers against the guns in sprint mobiles are worse off. I really believe that when putting programmes/fields together at Auckland for a relatively small horse population,  more variation in race format is needed from week to week (bigger mix of distance and hcp/mobiles to suit for a wider range of horse) and account must be taken of current form and earnings (several good wins 18 months ago shouldn't be a lifetime penalty). The rating system moves too slowly for a good honest horse and after all, what is the primary aim of handicapping?

Interesting that Methven, a voluntary-run club, can organise 100 people 'pods' that will allow the public to attend its meeting but the paid staff at Cambridge can't. Perhaps the wage bill at the latter makes it uneconomic.........
