    • I remember that day. I took my student non-racing flatmate to the TAB (we were both underage) one morning so I could take a few bets. We had to go early because betting closed TWO HOURS before the race. I worked out my bets and Geoff said he would have $1 each way on something. I laughed at the pitiful size of his bet as I was spending IIRC $20 on the double which was the main form of betting. He ripped up a piece of paper into as many pieces as there were races and randomly selected one then did it again to select the horse number. It turned out to be Our Countess so I urged him to have another go but he insisted that was his pick. Also remember there was no indication of what anything was paying...no TV screens with dividends...the commentators were not allowed to give any potential divs before the race.As a side note I remember being ushered out of the TAB for loitering and talking about races and people smuggling in transistors so we could listen in the TAB.You also couldn't collect on the same day. I then pretended I was 21 and put the bets on and home we went. Several hours later the races were run and of course I lost everything and Geoff won $350 ish which was the equivalent of the seven weeks pay he had earned over the summer break. Unbelievably he thought this was a normal thing but future visits to the TAB showed him otherwise. Those were simple times.
    • yep Napier Park did race at Hastings, has awful memoeies for me, they used to have a two day meeting and I was in my teens when I went to the first day and my girfriend at the time asked that I put $2 each way on Our Countess trained by the Brosnans, played bookie and home she rolled $312 win and I think $56 a place.  I had just started working so had to borrow off a mate to pay her.
    • I just can't see him being in the right spot in the Hunter Cup. He can't beat LTF coming from behind and he can't beat him leading. How can he beat him? Only chance is he would have to get an insanely good trip while the big guns go to war up front. He might be able to outsprint them in that scenario but it is a long shot.
    • Because perhaps MissJools is correct. Endlessly bagging the same person is borderline icky.
    • Correct Janitor but collect would have been better with 17/1 for the win. Overall a good day and really pleased  🍊  went south!
    • You are correct. I have won a number of races at Hastings but at the Napier Park Meeting.
    • I didn't think that I was that old but I've had runners at the following: Beaumont, Omakau, Motukarara, Waterlea, Nelson, Opaki, Feilding, Wairoa, Poverty Bay, Dargaville and nearly Waipukurau except that seems to have a reprieve and we have a runner there next Sunday!
    • Napier used to have their own track . Ceased racing 1960 when they joined Hastings . I'm sure when I first started following racing circa 1974 that they still had Napier Park race meetings at Hastings , although I maybe wrong but the name rings a strong bell with me .
    • Very good point. I have no idea why it is so secret. About a year ago when Australia changed several of theirs it was well publicised.
    • I was just calculating that other day that I have visited about 50 NZ racecourses and 20 of them are no-longer used. Ironically, about 6 or 7 of them are still being used by the trots and getting big crowds, but not good enough for the gallops.
