Noel Graham Harris (Mount Maunganui): Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the thoroughbred racing industry

Noel Harris (Te Ātiawa) was a formidable force during his 45 years as a racing jockey.

His career bolted from its 1970 start as he went on to claim 2167 national victories, the New Zealand Jockey Premiership in 1972-1973, and the coveted title of New Zealand Champion Apprentice Jockey in 1971-1972.

Harris shares the New Zealand record for most wins at 3200m – boasting four New Zealand cups, three Wellington cups, and three Auckland cups.

At 55, Harris made a name for himself as the oldest jockey to ride in the Melbourne Cup.

He marked the finish line of his racing days in 2015 by initiating the role of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Board apprentice mentor.

Through this he helps Kiwi apprentices improve their riding skills and abilities in everyday life.

In 2018 Harris was inducted into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame

Wonderful to see NGH recognised!! But you’d think NZTR would’ve tried a little harder to at least get things right in the email they sent out about the NY Honours.

Check out the following:   
Born into a racing family, his father Jock Harris was also a jockey. Among his most memorable victories were the 1988 New Zealand Derby aboard Tidal Light and the 1999 Auckland Cup with Lahar, as well as wins on New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame inductees Castletown and Poetic Prince. 

Where the hell did they come up with Harry riding Tidal Light in the Derby? (Grant Cooksley did the honours there when regular jockey Michael Coleman was injured). And the 1999 Auckland Cup winner was Irish Chance.  I thought NZTR had a library of reference books or do they just use ChatGPT now?!

At least they managed to mention Castletown & Poetic Prince!

Congrats to Harry. Well-deserved. Top rider in his time. He was born a week before me - so he'll be knocking 70 on January 14 if memory serves me well.

Fellow Racecafers, now is the time to put submissions in for Kings Birthday weekend Honours as they close a couple of months prior to being announced.

I'm sure some of you can think of those who deserve honor's before they pass on.

 

There's a link on the Governor General's website, and we are sure a Paper copy can be printed out and posted with a Postage Stamp, actually it's overdue we had our Racing great back on our Postage Stamps instead of the garish designs we have these days.

Gosh thanks for that information about nomination closing dates for Kings Birthday Honors for this coming June already been closed.

 

we checked DPMC website as a result of your information.

it's quite beyond belief as from recall it used to be at least the end of February not the December prior as that's a good 6 months prior to the Honors List been officially announced. 

We wonder who closed off that date, was it King Charles himself and his staff Team, or that of the New Zealand Government?

It appears it's because of "all the correspondence to read" which for our own Government seems odd.

Perhaps someone in the Media can follow up on this, if there's still any real Investigative Journalists reading this to inform us as to who has made these decisions.
