Gee Riccarton is an embarassment, especially considering it had a listed race and reasonably good fields. Just no flow on effect at all from Cup Week, which almost means those big event meetings have to be taken out of calculations when assessing how the industry is going. Do you have the figures for Wgtn Cup week which aren't listed above?

Where do you go to get the turnovers figures for each meeting as listed above?

The irony is that the figures suggest that NZTR's strategy of reducing the number of races, which JA said  was for the sole purpose of sustaining stakes, especially top end ones (a strategy driven by breeders particularly), has come back to haunt them.

T/o per race is flat. Total turnover is down roughly in line with the number of starters.

Obviously, the plan to continue reducing the number of events would discourage domestic buyers from acquiring as many horses, which might go someway to explaining the 40% decline in domestic buyer spend at the select sale. The strategy is flawed, has been tried before, and history is repeating itself, unsurprisingly. Here is the outcome of the previous implementation of the same strategy.

I am not a fan of reducing the number of races per meeting.  In the SI this means no clubs run 2yo races. In my view 2yo races are very important because if you want to get people involved in a syndicate they need to have the chance of seeing their horse race as quickly as possible. Basically at the moment people are being told to front with a collective $100,000 and told to wait a couple of years and we might get it to a race.

Interesting to that the major Australian meetings are going to nine races on a Saturday while we are going to eight. The big difference between Australian racing and here is that you have four metropolitan meetings going off on a Saturday and you can be in the bar at Caulfield and bet on races at Eagle Farm and Randwick  as if those races were happening right in front of you. Generally in NZ you are at Wingatui and your only other options are rubbish fields at Te Rapa or a trot meeting, and you can't normally hear those meetings anyhow.

Total starts made by Thoroughbreds in NZ are 15,763 which is 974 less than last season. Average field size is 10.67 in FY17, down slightly on 10.74 in FY16. The number of races with less than 8 starters is 211, 15 less than at the same stage last season. There is a 0.87% decrease in NZ Thoroughbred totalisator turnover and a 11.40% decrease in FOB turnover compared to FY16. Export turnover ($NZ) per race is down 3.61% to 11 February. Note: Turnovers are provided by the NZRB from various reports. On-course is totalisator turnover on the meeting and on intertrack meetings, plus FOB racing turnover on the meeting only. FOB intertrack is not provided from these reports at present and on-course self-service turnover is also not currently included. Total NZRB racing turnover is all racing bet through the NZRB. NZ racing turnover is NZ thoroughbred, harness and greyhound turnovers combined; imported racing turnover is all imported thoroughbred, harness and greyhound turnover. Combined with sports, the racing turnover provides the total NZRB turnover. NZ thoroughbred export turnovers are stated in $NZ, generally up to a week or two behind other turnover numbers. NZ thoroughbred export turnover for FY15 has been adjusted to take into account previous underreporting.
