Eljay has listed a number of valid negatives. Frankie has said  basically 'too little, too late.' Hard to see much in the way of positives from any angle. The big money drain has come over the past six or so years with the beleaguered building project. In that time we have also had a number of management changes. We have a new management team in at the moment. Nobody can change the past regardless of how fervent, honest or well meaning they are. My hope is that racing can begin again to whatever extent and that day to day costs can be covered. I don't care if the club can't make a profit, at least initially, but what they MUST do is stop the money hemorrage. If they can't contain the situation as it is then they will be doomed and the industry along with them.

Just shows how shoddy the Messera report was.  He didn’t take account of what tracks are dual code, just made up a list of tracks to close that anyone could have come up with.   What racing needed was a properly researched report that took all 3 codes into account. In my opinion the Messara report was amateur stuff.

Eljay, would add to Going Broke list perhaps top of list' cluster' of trainers.as opportunities to race reduced or extinguished (Manawatu)  .Believe it or not many trainers have big investments in purpose built properties in areas throughout NZ.

OH FFS ,you and others do the code a disservice by sticking up for guilty people. He was found guilty of turning up to drive under the influence, now he has pleaded guilty to misconduct and that's not even touching on his private life or potential INCA charges
He clearly needs  mentoring/help to sort out his professional and private life. Getting pissed and being charged twice suggests the sooner the better. Abusing the integrity body, no matter how much you dislike them is a one way ticket to the outhouse.

Whether he has done anything wrong, and it certainly hasn't been proved that he has, just imagine the stress B. Orange (and his family) is under as this thing drags on and on for ever. He has apologised for his outburst which IMHO is not surprising, and probably shows the utter frustration of an innocent man.

John - I was in the very back row of the old public stand as far east as you could get (about 200 yards) from the winning post.     I don't think there was anywhere else I could have squeezed in.      The roar when Wolfie took off I will never forget.    Magic race - magic horse!

Hi Cafers, really the current malaise at closing racing when we could have collectively kept it going safely sim to Australia is an indication of the weakness of so called experts employed in all racing to lobby, push for the need to keep a whole industry alive. there will be casualties before its over and not by their own making. Only way is to discuss better days....and hope the clouds lift....one is to compare the greatest races ever.... My top one and maybe many would be 1963 Auckland trotting Cup when the great Cardigan Bay who was cruelly handicapped 78 yards behind. Many knew he was the best horse ever but against the likes of Robin Dundee and vanderford he could struggle. Even Lazarus would struggle as would Terror to love from that handicap. The standing start over 2 miles meant the start plus 78yards was down by a new apartment which hopefully will be opening soon (that's another story) Cardy watched the starters arm and  threw up the track grit as he wheel spun away with a lap to go he made his move around the field with PT Wolfenden holding on down the back hehit the fronthaving spent lot of petrol could he hold on...the roar of estimated 20000 (although pos 50000 have said they were there!) seemed to carry him along to the narrow win.wow I was hooked on trotting that night and I am still addicted  ( these weeks have been worst of my life)… A true story..

Oh dear Majestic.......please read up on the 'Saga of the Apartments".
That 'punt' was to try and future proof the sport in North.
For a number of reasons it 'turned to custard'......IF better planned and managed it MAY have future proofed the sport up North where costs of taking part much higher.
Not a case of being the big boy !
Field sizes in south are great ,but they of little use when the TAB goes broke ,  and Southerners need to bet more to justify stakes.
Southern owners ,and I one of them , certainly lose more thru our sheer numbers.
We either wealthy , resilient or just plain stupid ?
    You?

Hunter the punter reacted to Nelli in Small owners and Covid
While great to see training getting underway again, little seems to be said about the impact this crisis has had on us small owners. For instance we had four horses in work (1 racing,  1 week away to trials, 1 preparing for Jewels and 1 midprep). All kicked for touch. As trained at or near Cambridge and starting from scratch again we cannot afford (and nor can our trainers manage under level 3) to bring all back in straight away, never mind the babies requiring education. We are not even bothering to bring our best horse back until certainty of good stakes and races for his grade and have already decided we can only afford to breed one mare this year (3 last year). I'm hoping some of the decision-makers high above realise the financial hit owners have suffered and the ongoing effects this will have on trainers, studs and race fields.

Expenditure on hobbies is discretional. Those with deep pockets will sail on and may benefit with less opposition. Those with little means will become spectators. Most will be in between.

Hunter the punter reacted to Stables in RITA’s future
Yes you are right, service fees are way too high and the resulting foals are hardly likely to be worth much more than the service fee. Perhaps breeders should take a leaf out of Tony Pikes book and refuse to send any mares to stud until all service fees are halved

    Hi Tasman Man
I am pleased that you didn't take umbrage at my comments as no malice was intended
I appreciate that you can have a laugh at yourself
I wasn't really thinking of the Group type horse, rather I was thinking of 2 or 3 very handy types who could then drop back to where they started off from.
The howls of protest would start
Penalty free races are great .... for those that win them!
I have said it on here before, it doesn't matter if you have a Class system, a Ratings System, a system based on Winning stakes or a system based on recent Stakes winnings
Two things will never change no matter what the system is
    1. If there are 2000 races there will be 2000 winners. Altering the system merely changes what horse (or trainer) wins those races
    2. Whatever system you have there will be anomalies
I remember a Points system promoted by Richard Brosnan years ago. Sounded good in theory. In practical terms there were huge holes in it. He had horses that could drop back to race againgst mid-range type horses by continuous 5ths in New Zealand Cups, Group races and the like. An anomaly that he hadn't covered
My preference was to have kept the Class system, altered the Age concessions, altered the drop-back provisions and spent some time educating Clubs about the never-ending opportunities they had to create races for like with like
    Too late now

Tony had some nice harness horses over his time back in the days when the vultures didn't snap them up for overseas careers after just one workout win.     Michelle bred most of them too.

Perhaps it was Elmer Gantry which I see won 6 as a 3 year old and 7 at 4 back in 1987/8.    That's a few years to churn back the memory bank.

As an aside, I remember a few years back in the days of C ratings (or maybe G) Tony Milina was the bad boy.   He had a 3 (I think) year old colt that he became very adept in placing and finished up the season with 10 + wins all or most penalty free.    The horse started the next season as a C1 or C2 which upset many trainers of run of the mill horses.     Can anyone remember what that horse was?    Would probably have been in the 1980's or 1990's.

    "John Legend"
This pandemic should give ATC the perfect opportunity to change to Saturday nights and fix the travel issues, and fix clashing with Addington which has halved the ATYC's TAB T/O
The argument that they have functions on Saturday doesn't wash, the "crowd" on a racenight doesn't affect their Function Rooms
