ln his attempt to justify closing of courses Messara states (p48)

"The case is also often put that if a racecourse is not costing the industry money, or much money, why should it be closed. Unfortunately, this is a fallacious argument. No racecourse in New Zealand pays its way. Racecourses and Race Clubs exist today only because of the income generated by the betting public, the significant losses that owners are prepared to sustain and the government taxation arrangements that apply. Others argue that Race Clubs should better understand that licences to run race meetings are a privilege and not a right" , and on p66,
"The Clubs have only continued to exist because they have been licensed to hold race meetings by the relevant authority and on which meetings there is licensed legal betting that generates almost all their income."
If he had bothered to take a quick look at my club's accounts before throwing our course on the courses to close list he would find that income from racing activities makes up only about 20% of total income with the other 80% being earnings generated from our assets built up by generations of prudent volunteer committee people over the last 100 years. How does that tally with the statements in the report!  Great to see that our current team of volunteers is already working hard planning their stategy to fight the closure and the theft of our clubs assets.  Lets hope that it doesn't end with full lawyer's pockets and few assets left for handing over to NZTR, but that is the most probable outcome unfortunately.

I suspect that the real reason for persisting with the North American race feeds is that they give the TAB's an excuse to open early and suck copious amounts of cash from the pokie addicts pockets.  Won't find this strategy outlined in any management operations review, or the results of their effort in any balance sheets though.

Barry are you sure you went to Rotorua today?  I also went to Rotorua with some friends today and had a really wonderful day.   Beautiful weather, some excellent racing, excellent facilities, just a really enjoyable, relaxing day with a good atmosphere on course.  And I am not talking through my pocket, perhaps unlike barryb, as I found winners hard to find.  The only disappointment forme was OP scratching himself yet again.  I have been to goodness knows how many dreary, boring, pointless meetings over the years - some of those midweek Te Rapa days certainly on top of the lst - but today was certainly not one of those.  I have always found a good  atmosphere at Rotorua.  If Barry wants music then why doesn't he just pop down to his local and put a coin in the duke box and sit there all day sucking on his beer listening to his music.

No raw nerves Barry.  Just enjoyed my day today and just had to reply as your assessment seemed so much at odds with my group's experience.  Actually some of us would also prefer just the game.  If I want all the extras I can go down town to a night club.  I am sitting here on my couch watching today's cricket in Christchurch (recorded).  Everyone seems relaxed and enjoying their day in the sun there too,  No load music blaring around the ground.  Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I watched First Call on Saturday for first time for some weeks on Saturday to find out what the "experts" were picking at Ellerslie to help sort my quaddie.  Aiden Rodley was really helpful!  He tipped a quaddie costing $750!!!  And the TAB market him as a tipster!  There needs to be a major cleanout of front people on all the trackside programmes.  Practically without exception they are either boring, lightweight, lack real knowledge and experience, unprofessional (compared to equivalent aussie programs), riddled with conflict of interest (e.g. jockey agents).  Come on RB, have a close look at this and start totally fresh in the new season.  Start with a clean sheet of paper and start from scratch. There are plenty of knowledgeable, articulate candidates out there.  Maybe call for nominations.  By the way I see Rodley's $750 tip only managed to pick 2 of the 4 legs in the quaddie.  He should be really embarrassed but my guess is that he couln't care a F.

Steve Davis is always good entertainment though should give up the tipping. Emily Murphy has good knowledge and may flourish if she was allowed of the RB leash and allowed to lighten up. Was impressed by Kim Clapperto's knowledge and energy when she has been on.  Maybe someone from Social Racing  or Simon Doul the ex cricketer to inject an entertainment factor.   Always thought Reece Jones who always has something to say could be worth looking at. David Walsh woud bring real knowledge and be prepared to argue points.  And dare I say it Leo brought interest and knowledge but I guess that is never going to happen  Plenty of candidates around.  Agree someone under 25 has to be part of the mix.

Last Sunday on Weighin Ken  Rutherford rubbished the small clubs about their lack of irrigation knowledge; "they just chuck a bit of water on and hope for the best.  Its just not good enough. They need some advice and help from larger clubs"  Who is going to ask to give Te Rapa some advice?
