I was with a few mates a couple of weeks ago after morning golf and we settled in for an afternoon on the punt at our local. My mates bet in reasonably high amounts, 500ew, 1k to win, 300/300ew etc etc. not one bet was placed on the TAB. Every bet was placed with other Agencies like Betezy, Bet365, sportingbet, etc etc, all betting either best tote or fixed odds. The NZ TAB has a filthy monopoly in NZ and is a weak betting medium. The only thing they will achieve is dry up the pensioners and those at work who like to have a few bets, which I suggest would be a pretty big number in NZ. The bigger punters don't bet on the NZ TAB.

Why try and fix something when its not broken, Ask Mr Myers, what PR work has been done to promote racing ownership and punting
high lighting the fun had and dollars made by his connections. His brilliance not only lays in his ability to get horses supper fit BUT also his placement of runners in races carded by clubs for which he plans and trains for months ahead. P.S I have no stable connection with this Master.

Traditionally a great week of racing here in Christchurch - ignore all the doubters, it will always be a great week as long as we support it.

The Winter Carnival at Riccarton was always three days of great racing, in days of yore.
 
These days, it is still one of the best Carnivals around.
 
The three-day Winter Meeting at Trentham was also the scene of great racing, year after year.
 
Now...all gone.

Almost as unbelievable as drawing 1 in each of the nz derby,great northern derby,and the jewels.

Was on course at Riccarton when Enceeoh won the National (1971 I think) -  and Peter Louis' horse won the second leg - Johns Pal from memory (Noel Eastwood rode him) - Peter had a double going and "broke the tote" - i recall it was something like a $2500 double ticket and he virtually took the entire pool - can't recall the amount he collected but it was staggering - headline news on the Monday -No doubt the SPs got a slaughtering too - was fearless on the punt. Characters like Peter no longer on the landscape. Great days .... if only they returned ..........
