There was a breeding bonus pre covid for fillies and Mares at Addington, except for Premier days. This is just a re- hash with a few tweaks, paid by HRNzZ instead of through the Breeders Assoc.

Well if I had a nice mare that say won $5,000 in breeding credits I think it would incentivise me to breed at least 1 foal.  Then I could decide if I wanted to carry on breeding or sell her on.  Otherwise I might just sell her on & she may end up going overseas.

You would probably get a good offer for those you speak of before raceday retirement and end up overseas and the bonuses will be of nought really. Good 1-2 win fillis/mares fetch around 30k from Aussie, they make back that money reasonably quickly there.

The best way to have made it work was to have what is accumulated to 1 Aug each year and either  split between owner and breeders or to the breeder.

A breeder is going to breed , not all owners breed. Under the new system an owner can sell the mare with breeding bonus and with say 4 or 5 years acculation,  10k added value to the mare, more mares will end up at the big studs.

  3. So if I have sold the mare that races , as the breeder I don't  get the credits ? That defeats the purpose ? That only incentivies leasing ? Paying service fees for the likes of Bettors Delight ,Art Major , Captaintreacherous and then leasing makes no sense. They are the progeny trainers want.

  4. There is a new incentive  for breeders beyond the current BIS .

You will get a share of $1500  credit as a breeder from races. Full details to follow, but believe it can go towards stud fees or vet fees ( including if your mare does not fall pregnant).

The Jewels day used to have an excellent card of One mile racing , with All the Best horses, and All in their own age divisions . Best days racing going each year.

and What a list of winners it has /or had. .....But have they scrapped it now ? with the changing of the season dates ?

Yip, now 2yo feature day is  early December at Addington , not sure when Aucklands is programmed for. Now it is hard to get leader boards which represented the top 12 of each jewel division in bold and the rest in plain print.

Now it's a guessing game to figure out how many 2yo races there has been and winners ( including prizemoney)

  6. Have to agree that grass track and two mile races are great and not boring.

However mile racing for the young ones does have a place and should be programmed more often. Agree that 2yo only days should have their place , if only trainers would  support it, which they don't. Only the good ones race more than 6 times a year at 2yo.. Many have less than 3 starts ,put aside for 3yo racing. With the new calender we don't have many 2yo races to today's date. Years gone by we have already had a jewels and young guns  champions. 7 and a half months into the year we have yet to have a group 1 for 2yos.

As for the trotters mile, most got out safely and The Dominator was the only one with decent gate speed , with drawn wide took its toll at the end, a fairer starting point might have been closer up but then Jimmy Carter and Co,  may have had better luck too.

NZ racing would be extremely boring if all miles on all-weather tracks, especially with the way we handicap and put fields together. It would be like our typical 2200 mobile pace - out fast, even time the next 2 halves then sprint home. Suits horses fast off the gate and few others.

What happened with carding a 2700m mobile for maidens for pacers , it happened each meeting a few years back I remember.

  8. Massive effort by the winner " Mighty Looee" , skipped away , losing initial ground and then ran sub 1:56 (approx) for the last mile. They did mention when brought back from Aussie to have a go at the NZ Cup, and that just showed he is a real chance in it ( with a clean getaway)

Logical evolution however it hurts as it progresses. Online and connectivity is the way forward.

TAB’s in most suburbs in cbd areas - gone ( unless there’s pokies included)

    phone betting- gone

self service machines - mostly going and gone

on course betting at windows - next cab off the rank?

The TAB won't be getting rich on the Melbourne Cup and NZs big days when the queues get long at remaining outlets and no parking about  .More money will go to Office Sweepstakes and when they  can't  see them on regular TV interest will wane . I give that about 5 years .

  10. The tab has ear-marked touch portals in some ( or all ) pubs and possibly workingmens clubs to be abolished. Can someone from HRNZ confirm how far this is going ( towards total online only services ? ) This is your service to the public and own part of . As Ashburton was on Monday I went to the Woolston Club to deposit funds but alas was closed. I know the older generation are not tech savvy  and I know former retired trainers that enjoy their Saturday arvo at the pub placing bets and having table bets. You would be not serving them their enjoyment with abolishing the portals.

  11. I think the incentive to breed is OK, the terms of info and how it is going to run is a bit of a turn off.

Think it would be more prudent to help the wastage ( give a horse a chance ) by subsidizing the breaking in costs. This comment has come in light of another fifteen horses seized by MPI from a breeder and the ones last year in Kaikoura. Not the ultimate solution but one that may help.

With urban sprawl and the now high cost of land (grazing) breeders other than present life style block owners , trainers and stud farms the small breeder will disappear and long with it future owners and participants. Fair comment ??

  12. Some horses in Canterbury were not getting starts after nominating locally especially when as you mention travel costs to meeting like Nelson and Rangiora getting washed out. There was a plan to have these mid-week meetings in winter as usually this was the case last year.( horses missing out) . The lower funding has seen most of these Addington low mid-week meetings already canned for winter.

Trotting sale at Christchurch is a train wreck .

Mr Pass  will be just about be the the top buyer

100 trotting bred horses whole sale, , minus the withdrawn and passed in one's  The money put forth to sales races for 4 events ( I gather ) kinda gives you a runners chance for a group race. I would think you have a 25% approx chance to run in them  On the other hand you could end up lining up against a pacing bred that only wants to trot. That does lengthens the chance for a runner., might not be many though.
