Are you looking to name a horse that you are going to hopefully purchase at Karaka Sales, or for that matter any sales?

Have a browse in the Papers Past NZ " Horse Racing History" archives, including "Illustrated Sporting & Dramatic Review" and "Turf Talk" etc for inspiration.

Perhaps there's a story about the horse/ horses, you will be the owner of, earlier dams and sires in there or your own family Racing history.

We look forward to seeing and hearing some brilliant names of days gone by resurface.

Another fun way to find a name in PPNZ is to use search words "Yearling Sales" starting from 1838 era of media.

It would be great to see some of those earlier names resurface from an educational aspect of our industry so those stories carry on.

As an aside, It's 100 years of National Sales in New Zealand coming up in 2026.

Let's all embrace it and kick start having Horse Expos and Racing associated events for the wider community.

How about we all push for the Ministry of Education to include more about our industry in schools starting at Primary schools and have over night camps at Horse Stables / Stud Farms, visits to Vets, An outing to the Race Commentators box, Press Box etc,  for children to really experience what goes on in the Day in the life of a horse's life and those working in there field to ensure the betterment of our future younger generations.

Contact your local Museums to put on a Racing Related Exhibition to

@janeg this should be in your plans and circles to with your collections.

I can give you some.  None are my idea of course but I've long had a passion for well named horses.

Here's a couple:

NETTOYER  (which is French for 'to clean')   Dam is Clean up

MR MARKLE                  Sire:  Harry Angel

SUIT YOURSELF            Sire: Savile Row

MYLIPSARESEALED         Dam: Tellmeabouit

Those willl surely give new owners something to think about.  :)

That would be great to get younger people, and general.public, involved in learning about racing. However with most uninitiated people they just equate horse racing with gambling and shenanigans like Fine Cotton saga.So.pushing up hill with trying to get most institutions involved

Most of the uninitiated including those with school aged children would never have heard of the fine cotton saga!

What? It's only 40 years ago now! I've forgotten the name of the horse involved myself. Bold Personality rings a bell.

I see a recent starter is named exactly the same as one i raced mid to late 90s.

Mine won one race and i recall me telling an onlooker that i would hate to be paying for those behind it the day it won.😃 Sacked v shortly afterwards

Have you tracked back further in history what other relations your horse had and the stories behind them?

Perhaps your horse was also named after an earlier one.

It's fascinating seeing human as well as horse Dam & Sire history and who lived where along with the Racecourse's all communities had as it also gives an indication where people worked and settled around the country side.

There's also some great stories who in Racing has planted Trees around the country side - we often hear / read of people knocking down those who work with animals however those people also contribute positively in other aspects of life.

That's another aspect our Education of Children and newer migrants need to be taught.
