'I did hear Riddell say something about not impressed. What did he say and what was he talking about? I did think of rewinding but decided I couldn't really be bothered.

'The new bit of ground he has given us is not very nice'

  2. Yes what outstanding coverage they provide the only Listed race in NZ yesterday was at Wanganui and what no after race content shown not even delayed yet we get all the fan fair from races a Te Rapa though not saying we shouldn't. What a story it provided with a South Island horse coming to take the spoils. But let's go and watch them walk around birdcage at Te Rapa. Wonder what Sweeney though of J Riddell's comments after his win when interviewed earlier

Surely they have to either remove the surface and relay it, or work it up and remove the stones, then reseed it?

How could they possibly have laid a track that it is not possible to maintain with standard aeration equipment? It beggars belief after all the time and money spent on it.

Surely the biggest question is why wasn't this attended to before any seeding as they knew the stones were there. The old story fix a problem then it doesn't come back to bite I

Thats what you get when you have so many "experts" advising a huge mess...18 months out and possibly many many more to get a decent track.

I never understood why it had to be a sand based track, has anyone ever said why???

But it's not a sand-based track. It's a soil/silt-based track with sand in the profile.

I think you guys are putting some pretty lofty goals in front of them , I would suggest unattainable .

What his job then the last on left because of the negative criticism, it was actually his job to get the industry moving positively as he had plenty of coin to play with

  6. It's always a bad sign when the only thing they talk about is what they have done. Front up to the expectations of the industry is the first thing off the rack I would think instead of putting your slippers on under the coffee table

I agree , but when I seen it my first thought "when did this become a thing again?".

I wonder if it is going to become a regular feature at all tracks ?

Most interesting I think was it wasn't shown in any lead up track information all week and Raceday to the point it was even noted in the Stewards Report but everyone else could see it.

Was Kate interviewed, and if so has anyone got a copy?

To the best my knowledge Te Rapa was/is a sand carpeted track. Is Awapuni now identical?

I thought that the primary "thing" about Awapuni was the drainage which certainly involves sand but I didn't realise that it was sand carpeted.

Yes, same process but the difference is Awapuni has done the sand slitting which allows the moisture through the profile to the drainage system better.

It does make sense, if it was like HB, too little put on, too late.

Interesting Kate states the track is like Ellerslie which it is not. One is a sand-based track the other has been sand carpeted. Totally different. so today at Te Rapa they have put on extra water I think not

I think there is one word repeated in this press release that needs changing..."experts" to F#%@wits...

Awapuni’s long-awaited return ends in disappointment
    By LOVERACING.NZ News Desk
Awapuni’s long-awaited return to racing on its newly renovated grass track has ended in
disappointment, with their ANZAC Day meeting abandoned following a slip in the opening race.
“A horse slipped on the outside,” RACE’s General Manager of Racing Brad Taylor said. “Walking the
track, there is no visual slip, but we have got to have jockeys’ safety first. They are the ones going
out there and riding on it and it’s on us that this has happened.
“It’s really unfortunate, but we will learn from it and put the plans and processes in place to make
amends for it and hopefully be back here in three weeks’ time.”
The rail had been put out six metres for the meeting, and Taylor said this was done on the advice of
a number of track specialists who the club has contracted over the 19-month renovation process.
“There were two reasons (for putting the rail out six metres),” Taylor said. “The first one was that we
had jump-outs here for local ones (horses). There was a patch at the 600m, a half-metre by half -
metre square, where a rock was brought up when we were Verti-Draining and a bit of repair had to
go into the track, hence why the trials went out to three metres. Then obviously we had the weather
that day, we had 13ml of rain before the first (heat) and it rained throughout. There was quite a lot
    of damage.
“It is a young, immature track, so on the advice of the experts, we moved it (rail) out six metres.
People say it’s a dumb decision, but we are just following the advice of the experts.
“We have had plenty of horses over it right through the process. We will go back and work with
them (experts) and the plan always was for the meeting on the 17 th (of May) to go back to the true
position to give that small area an extra three weeks. That will be our plan at this stage.
“It is only going to get better the more horses over the top of it and a bit more maturity. The riders’
feedback was that it felt good under foot. Unfortunately, we have had this one slip that we can’t
hide behind and it’s been the telling factor of the track.
“We will go through the process we had leading into today, learn from it and we will come back
bigger and better.” – LOVERACING.NZ News Desk

Don't you love it when they say we will learn from it and the processes we had in place.

Rail out 6m. Why? Bend into the straight still too sharp. More questions than answers.

In theory if following the true position, the bend should only be slighter not sharper. Simply geometry

I thought the point was also that many horses fly to Australia after the first race in the Triple Crown, and that it's easier to do so from Auckland than Palmerston North. Maybe l read it wrong?

Yes, did mention that. Wonder how many have done that anyway?

  13. Interesting comments in article by your old mate Mick that the first Group` 1 of new season be in Auckland as to horse population up there and it's so much easier for them to travel to. Other 2 HB Group 1 days be Awapuni. Just shows how much CD needs this venue operating or all CD Group races will disappear.

  14. .  Interesting to note that all starting limits have been set at 12 for all races. One would imagine the track is some 25m wide and rail out 6m How precious is this track

And that to add to racing on a deck and went up the plastic and the EV and KM nonsense...he is a total muppet in my opinion sorry. And Rodley is in the same league, I can nearly know before he asks a winning connection what he is going to ask, and they are stupid questions.

Poor Aidan confuses the interviewee by asking the same question just in a different way.

  16. Can someone give BP a list of notifiable gear for horses parading when Reptak as he described was wearing ear warmers not pre-race ear covers. Maybe us at home need pre-race ear covers on at times.

I must say good to see Ellerslie is racing much better these days I for one was very critical early on...it is still far from perfect as takes a ton of work but geez it raced well today after so much rain...definitely heading in the right direction and horses won from everywhere today, front back inside draws outside draws so it seemed a pretty fair surface to all...I know many other tracks if they had that amount of rain would of been bottomless.👏

Yes, it is a lot of work, but we are seeing what it can handle with its use, and I would think as it develops it will only get better. Well done to Jason and his team. Just to note with the structure it does provide the perfect structure for drainage when raining and infiltration for irrigation which does lack on our old soil-based tracks.
