You will be able to sit back and see Kevin Myers collect the majority of stakes on offer as the season starts.

Problem there Gruff is, will there be any horses working on the track prior to 11o'clock to get any sort of accurate assessment? I doubt it. They can walk, look and prod all they like but as long as it keeps raining, running a few races is the only way they'll see if it's successful or further disaster.
hope they gallop one on the rail at Hawera today before the first race

Come in trucking experts! - - would that have been possible in 4 days? If so how much damage would that weight in dump trucks do to the track?
For one they wouldn't put it on with a truck it would be done with a sand spreader behind tractor 90 tonne is about 45 cubic metres, 2 truck and trailers.

Sad to see, I didn’t see that race, I was on Motor Racing at that stage…
They will get it right…….
yes, they not just sitting around and not doing anything to it, to try to improve it and they have done everything within the requirements of the tracks design and suppliers Mind you they are accountable as its their product they supplied the ARC.

They might be having second thoughts after watching the events at Randwick at the weekend. Pic at 6am.
Cannot imagine any course here running a meeting after 230mmm of rain in 24 hours, whatever the surface.
Incredible that they were running 1.10.4 in the TJ Smith, and 1.35.2 in the Doncaster was truly unbelievable.
I heard Radley say they had put 5000 tons of sand in the track base over 5 years of renovations…….that’s why.
As shown, it does show how far we are behind in have tracks structurally built for purpose not only to take weather events but also irrigation.

Compare it to the Sydney track today after torrential rain last night.
Unfortunately, we are still behind the eight ball with track structures and having to over irrigation to provide safe footing and now we have lost the ability to have a good 3 summer track which is described as a track with moisture in it. Matamata preformed well as usual.

The track presented for last meeting was unacceptable - poorly maintained and prepared. That will not be a surprise for anyone who has been to the course in past few years.
Avondale JC has the power to transform NZ racing via their assets.
Unfortunately, they are their own worst enemy. They want to be a part of racing they have to keep doing the job right as too many committees think you just use it like a merry go round and it fixes itself. Get with the real world.

Plus "The Hill" won't be there anymore, even if the new track surface was suitable to jumps racing. A big shame.
Oh well, at least we've still got the spectacular Paeroa steeplechase course. Oh, that's right, that one has gone too.
Te Aroha should be the place for "The Northerns" I think, once refurbished, although the steeplechase was a good watch at Te Rapa.
Really the Northerns are gone forever never to be seen again. Te Aroha or Te Rapa won't bring them back and they need to change the name of those races as to not denigrate those races of the pass that were spectacles in jumps racing. Next, they send the Grand National to Wanganui then you will see how far they will go to keep the name alive. Of note I take nothing away from West Coast and Nedwin as to their efforts as that is what jumps racing desperately needs.

Oh, we had rain on Saturday morning so we can't run the trials on Tuesday. Gore had a month's rain in a day and the area was flooded out but before it arrived obviously not knowing the extent of what they did get moved their race meeting 2 days and raced. I wonder are they taking the pi--- or is It now a fine weather track only. Once touted as the saving grace for CD winter racing.

The WRC have a very strange attitude towards once great races. They either dump them altogether or use the names for minor league races with rubbish fields. Races like the Whyte, Parliamentary, Winter Oats, Chalmers, NI Challenge Stks have either disappeared or are now just a low grade nonevent. Other races like the Cuddle get moved months away from their traditional spot in the calendar.
Other clubs are just as bad, the ARC with the Cornwall etc. The common theme seems to be that there is just no appetite for winter racing anymore. Perhaps we just have to accept that. Who knows, in years to come we may have some equally famous brand new feature races on the AWTs.
Yes, there are a lot of races that have turned into 2nd tier races compared to their predecessors obviously caused by horses being sold as youngsters not retained in the industry due to rising costs and return in stakes on offer if you can win them, money in bank better than what's on offer.

Wfa racing 64 rated horse winning, good for owners but what does it do for WFA racing in NZ

Isn't it better than doing nothing at least they are trying...why be so negative at everything???
It's not so much being negative but think they shouldn't just jump in and look at ways of clearing the till on one race of that type as what if the lower-class day over carnival they spread an extra 350k across the board to feed a few more mouths.

Earlier today NZTR released stakes money for the upcoming season and I feel it's great news for the industry.
All grades have had increases with the exception of Premier Maidens which will stay at $30,000. Group 1's had a significant boost increasing by a $100k to $400,000 to try and help keep our good horses here. They have once again singled out group 2,3 and Listed races depending on what day they are run. This doesn't make much sense to me but still all have increased. We will be running for at least $65,000 on Premier meetings (up from $50,000).
Saturday meetings - Open Handicaps have increased from $40,000 - $50,000 and other benchmark races will increase from $30,000 - $40,000. Maiden races also get a significant increase too.
Midweek racing (where the majority of horses are) are big winners too. You will now be racing for a minimum of $17,000 (as opposed to $14,000) and from 26 August - 6 April you will be racing for $18,500 and Open Handicaps are now enhanced from $15,000 - $25,000. All 19 twilight meetings will have minimum stakes of $25,000 (increase of $11,000).
We also see the introduction of "Innovation Races", which include a 4YO Karaka Million race worth $1,000,000. A South Island race worth $350,000 with "golden ticket" options - I think that's great. A special conditions Maiden race for Te Rapa worth $350,000. $350,000 for a 2100m race at Trentham for 1 win horses as of 31 July and the popular Southern Mile increases to $200,000.
Total Stake $350,000
1st $175,000
2nd $59,500
3rd $28,000
4th $15,750
5th $8,750
6-14 $7,000
Code bosses claim the mammoth cash injection is sustainable and could increase further in the next few seasons.
All in all I think a huge day for NZ Racing and keen to see other people's thoughts/opinions.
Surely if you have 350k would you use it on a 1-win 2100m race at Trentham or spend it on the track as you have learned this season without the track you have no race meeting. It's like we have got bailed out again with a pot of gold and let's get rid of it before anyone notices.

In no particular order. Stratford,Opaki,Levin and Woodville must be living on borrowed time. As i said earlier just my opinion
How stupid this quote unbelievable. How much does Stratford ,Opaki and Levin cost the industry ... nothing yet they supply a service to the industry through training centres. Woodville is there to pick up the slack from Awapuni not only with flat racing but the lower end jumps racing now.

You are basing it on new track being fine long term. Who knows how it will last. My mate who is a trainer says he has talked to 10 other trainers who have no faith in those sort of tracks at all, high maintenace and expensive to keep. It better be the answer to our woes and no where else to go from there.
So, your mate and his 10 other mates have all raced on the surface to know it doesn't work or they are just a lot of I can do it better because I know best as I've been a Track manager since I started training horses.

The cost of keeping a horse to a be a 5yo plus open horse is add up over 4 seasons. Expensive to keep.
If real promising as a 2-3yo the money is too good to turn down so sold.
Hence we have no depth in open company. Te Akau's model can afford to keep them going.
Ag Challenge Stakes formerly the Jackson Stakes that use to be run the second day of September meeting that was taken over when Hawkes Bay carnival was evolving. But to think the likes of Bonecrusher and Horlicks Veandercross Rough Habit etc going around in this race my how far it has fallen to be a winter WFA race. Yes, certainly no depth in open class horses this time of year and The Te Akau Model works well as its easier to get a little from a lot of owners than a lot from one to keep some coming back for more each season

Or more accurately the relaying/remaking of the track 25 years ago.
They can’t fix it without a complete rebuild and they haven’t got the money, notwithstanding theoretical insurance money that may or may not come from the Grandstand claim 12 years down the track.
Maybe it’s already been paid, it’s been used, and they still have to pay to have the stand removed.
If that’s the case, any track rebuild is like me getting my virginity back!!!

Yes. Was there in 1999 with a jumper in National and couldn't believe how the soil was like a swamp on top and 6 inches down like concrete and they still raced all three days no issue.
