yes maybe they got no idea of how to frame the field till most of the money goes on then give some unders hoping no one backs anything with them other than the tote that they get there 20% take or what ever it is they grab.

The final field odds for Kilmore (Monday) are only been shown very close to the race start. I haven't notice this happening before, is this the norm during the week? My race is 8.30pm so more than likely I be snoring on the couch with the TV going in the background. Must be a reason for this, not sure you see this happening in Aussie with all the competition they have over there.

one way to beat the system bet with cash at any TAB or race course. 2: get brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers people you trust and they open accounts up and you use those, always ways around these roadblocks. -
Real champion he be the sort I could stand at the leaner and sink a few ales and have a few laughs with. Thanks for the read

Pretty sad picture that the TAB portray of themselves. This person really is gold to the industry and here he is treated in a manner that could cost the industry much more than what the TAB is losing. No wonder NZ racing is where it is with that sort of treatment. Remember the days of Steel Balls and his large bets (100K) bets and the TAB were talking him up, playing on his ego to bet more and making him a hero knowing he was a mug bettor that they would one day have all his money. Guess what, they got all his money to the point he was broke and they didn't once say no Steel Balls we can't steal anymore of your money we taken to much already. Should be laws that stop this sort of monopoly. Saw a chap at the casino was more sober than myself and was making a fortune a little later on they got the heavies and told him he had to leave as he was intoxicated. TAB and casino make many millions a year and should have to weather the bad days by law. -
the nazi's at work, you little kids need to be told what to wear and how to wear it as you really are to stupid to be responsible to work it all out for yourselves. These nazi's will be coming into your homes next and telling you how to live.

Just like government departments and councils and many other organisations within this country they are corrupt and unaccountable. You only ever need one bad captain of a ship to sink all the hard work that is done over the years of many good captains, so easy to spend money that isn't yours and to be paid large sums to do it regardless of the results of your decisions.

there was a foreman for Rogerson who rode in a jumping trail at Rotorua some years back thinking in the 80s fell and died and then there was Neil Hain.

thats everyone ripping everyone off as the usual in this country. Businesses don't need to be charging a surcharge. When setting prices you look at the costings of public holidays etc for the year and then you factor those costings into your prices. Some ass came up with this great idea in the restaurant trade I think from memory and now many businesses use it and it becomes the norm. In fact most businesses that are open for business make more on the public holidays than they do during normal days as people are out spending money instead of working. When you look back some years ago we never had a surcharge for anything.

I heard from some chinese whisper that Ellerslie along with Harrods casino applied for a licence to open and were closed out by Sky City. From memory convention centre was at the centre of the bride with the decision makers. How true all this is I not quite sure but wouldn't at all surprise me that Sky City wouldn't want competition.

"The handicapper is the most corrupt person in Racing?"
bestbets replied to Idolmite's topic in Thoroughbred Cafe
I'm sure there will be charges. The media can be the vehicle to promote yourself and improve your outcome in life and business, or the vehicle to cause you many sleepless nights. In this case might be the sleepless nights. Sometimes it is better to say nothing and let people think you are silly than to open your mouth to prove you are silly. The only positive is that he didn't directly name the person, he said handicapper, hope there is more than one handicapper in NZ. -
got involved when I moved to Cambridge, never forget driving past the Cambridge Raceway one race night and I didn't really have a clue what the place was about and what went on in there. I saw these men in white coats and thought you had to be invited to get in so just drove past and went somewhere else for the night. It wasn't till some time later a few friends said lets go to the raceway an have a night out. They explained to me any body can go and thats when I laughed that the place look like a fortress and I had driven past without going in. I backed $1 place in each race and got a buss and I was hooked and hardly missed a meeting for many years. I remember when I just got hooked I had to buy Best Bets and learn the jargon etc I remember looking to see where the trots were for the weekend and the best bets said Thames trots Friday night, cool I thought a hour down the road so grab my mate and we headed for Thames. We get to Thames and no idea where the track is so stopped in at the garage and the person behind the counter started laughing saying bud you got to go to Auckland, what I said, Auckland, no it says Thames in the book by this stage he really started laughing and asked how far we travelled. Never forget that moment all those years ago we ended up at the local pub instead no TV in those days. I wonder if anyone else ever did something like that in there young wild days.

cant be to bad, still plenty of horses and trainers racing horses. problem is no one really wants to do what is needed to make the industry viable as there is to many with there own agendas and self interests. Geographically we are so spread out the costs have increase beyond what the industry can return in stakes and we are a small population. If you were to really run the industry as a business to make real returns and good stakes you would get rid of 80% of tracks and centralise to main centers. Instead market forces will force the weak out over time. The industry will never die as some are saying. What we will have will be tracks force to close and trainers force to look for other employment as has happen with some tracks to date. This industry has been for some time and still is a slow cancer that is killing the weak. If we had hard decisions been made now we might have a better industry for the future just quicken the process today instead of 10 years down the track when this is where the industry will be anyway.

Sadly the theme is the same and the results are sadly from a monopoly of people that are appointed and regardless of results are still going to receive a wage an not be accountable to anyone. Reminds me of governments and councils so easy to spend others money. Would we have this sort of discussion if the TAB was privately owned? I'm sure if it was my company then I would be doing everything I could to keep my customers happy. You buy a TV you get the GST back then you get the deprecation of that asset, can't understand how simple things within a business can be let to get to a point you feel like you are still in the 70's

did you all think it would change... the next Tui Ad... I see Trackside is so much better now we have to pay to watch...yeah right

You see week in week out in NZ very poor rides, sometimes it like watching the dodge cars where jocks just push a horse out of the way and that horse that gets push out stops the horse behind it becomes a chain reaction and nothing gets down about it. We have just had the Sydney Carnival and not that I saw all races but there riding there is so clean and every horse gets there chance. I didn't see any hard luck stories.

I agreed Gruff. I go to the casino and they are worst leaches around, over the years I have seen the most saddest things going on where people lose large amounts, wifes are trying to get husbands, partners out and the casino just looks the other way, they need these losers to keep the business going. It is the nature of the beast their business is people spending money it is not up to them to question if you can afford to lose, even though at times it can be very obvious that someone has a gambling problem. I think it is a very small percentage that has a gambling problem and most people are responsible. You could also say all people that walk into a bottle store are alcoholics but you would fine only a small percentage of them are.

I understand that the TAB need to learn a lot about public relations and how the punter is a very important part of there business and shouldn't be taken for granted as there is other avenues for people to go and bet on with todays technology. Sadly I am not a big better and only today did i bet $60 as i had the unusual pleasure of a win last week. My point is that I like to support NZ racing and I know there are better odds and less take out rates etc with overseas firms but what do they give back to NZ racing. I might be the last person off the sinking ship, and if I took gambling serious I would consider it but in the meantime I just throw my $20 away on a Saturday as a charity bet and if I win I will just look after that winning money till the next week before I give that back to the TAB.

Yesterday I took a Quaddie at the Avondale races. In leg one I took one horse Cherry Vain in the 2nd leg I took the field, 3rd leg Telepathic and last leg I take Katie's Cove. As we know my first leg was a late scratching for what ever reason so the TAB give me the off course favorite and that runs down the track. OK so I lose my money and it's not much, so I can live with that. Later I was thinking this really shouldn't be allowed to happen. The investment I made was for 1 horse to win leg one of my choice not for the TAB to decide what horse I should have so that they don't lose my money. What happens say a big punter likes one horse in leg one and then takes the FxFxF in the other 3 at a cost of $2240 is that just bad luck and that is gambling. They don't even allow for you to reinvest your selection to another runner don't seem right to me. I know it a little different if it was say leg 2 your horse was scratch as you have already had the 1st leg run. Just my thoughts and I guess you just need to know the pitfalls of the exotics before you gamble

Today I have put on $60.00 of bets and decided that I will sit at the computer an watch the racing on the TAB website. Silly me didn't realize that I needed a positive balance otherwise the live streaming stops. Personally I think the TAB would be better to leave open the live streaming to those that have had a bet. Say you bet you get a 24hr window to watch live streaming. I go and spend $60.00 for the day now can't watch the live streaming yet I could have no bets but have $1 in my account and watch live streaming for a month a week or what ever I choose.

Not sure I really care if the racing is on TV or not. I have multi sky and usually trackside is only watched on a Saturday if I am home which isn't to often. I got bored with racing when the TAB took racing from sport to roulette gambling and what I mean by that is we get to see NZ racing which is so often cut short to cross over to other racing across the world which is a total bore. The powers that be forgot about the product that could be entertaining and enjoyable to watch and allow for me to spend the day gambling to spending the day away from the TV to do other things. Watching racing some days is like torturing your enemy. I use to easily spend around 200 a week in the old days now I spend a $20 on a saturday and some times I can just go without having a bet. So in summary where one thinks more racing to gamble on the more money spent by the public it has worked in the opposite direction for me and maybe many others. Time will tell if the right decisions have been made but I feel for those that really love racing. I mow a retired persons lawn (no charge) who belongs to a syd they have a $10 spend amongst 5 so $2 a week and she sits in front of the TV all the time to watch racing which is about all she can do because of her mobility and now she can't afford the money to pay for the change over and I feel very sad for her, she is one of many, the reality of life I guess.

Puccini runs 5th in Derby , led and fought well but did Craig make a difference ???? I think he was lucky that no other rider took the race to him, if someone had sat up outside him he be walking over the line in last place. Over raced in front was never going to be winning from a long way out. Hope the owners were happy with there change of rider. Think I would have stuck with MW, he knows the horse and all his tricks and has ridden him to settle in his races before, very hard for a new jock to get on with a head strong horse first up.

I remember in the early 80's when i flatted with a jockey who told me a story about a big race he was riding in and the tactics that he and other jocks used to get an advantage over the jock that on paper was the fav to win. The story was that they got into this persons head about how much money was on his horse and everyone expects you to win. They also knew the horses racing patten so knew where the horse would be settling etc. By race time this rider he told me was shaking and never finished in the money. This jock also was not a senior rider, but my point is that after the derby we heard MW tell us that he rode the horse back in the race as he knew that the other riders would be riding against him and expect him to lead. Was that also the instructions from the trainer, I doubt it but as MW won the derby he was the hero, no doubt the trainer said nothing about the ride other than he was a genius and the owners would also be dancing up and down like 5 year old kids thinking he was the best in the world. 6 weeks later the horse has its first race and is fresh as a daisy and we have the trainer saying he rode against instructions, sadly i think that is a load of crap, just an excuse for the change of rider. You will see horses many times over race when they have there races space out. The owners are so ungrateful that I hope it goes as bad for Williams. I bet not one of the owners has ever ridden in a race to know how hard and what can go wrong and it not always the jocks fault but so easy to blame them just politics of racing.
