I also wonder why the additional meetings are in the North. It would be more sensible to have them in the South where there are far more hobby trainers that can afford to race for low stakes as they do most of the work themselves. But in defence of North, they are just the "canary in the mine". The problem of declining horse numbers is nationwide - just compare Addington field sizes with those of 20 years ago and ask any stud! We do have nice horses in the North. But with fewer horses, the current handicapping/race conditions make it mighty tough on any horse that could get above R60. It costs more to own horses up here (training/feed/agisting) so it makes sense to sell nice horses (or retire them to the broodmare paddock) once they "reach their mark" before they rack up bad form or break their hearts. Sort out handicapping/conditions and we once again could have better fields at Auckland for both owners and punters.

HRNZ's press release on the new calendar said 1. "our horse population is heavily skewed to the lower to middle grade horse.. and the new calendar... will open up many more opportunities ... especially in the upper North Island", and 2. "The calendar represents a 20% increase in race meetings.. focussing on northern meetings with commitments from Addington and Southland". The "elephants in the room" is that these statements said nothing about the fact that an increasing portion of that total horse population are trained and raced everywhere in New Zealand escept the North Island, and generally when those horses race in lower and middle grade races across the South Island the industry makes money from that racing- the betting revenue earned exceeds the stakes subsidies HRNZ pays for that meeting. That doesn't happen in the North Island, where every race today requires a c. $3000 top up in stakes from surplus revenue earned in the South Island. Nobody appears willing to address the obvious fact that the venues and product put up for punting customers in the North Island just isn't good enough to attract their interest in the 21st century world of wall to wall digital and online gambling offers. Why will adding c. 20% more offers of an inferior product out of the North Island change any of this, and won't it arguably make the harness racing product look even more inferior to other racing offers, and just get even closer to greyhounds as an off peak / filler product for punters? When those lower and middle class horses HRNZ reference race at most venues in the South Island, where all the "surplus" horse population is currently domiciled , they deliver more betting revenue, so why not add the new meetings next year to tracks such as Timaru, Rangiora, Ashburton and Methven, even Addington! It's interesting that HRNZ reference the "commitments of Addington and Southland", where overall betting revenue earned doesn't create any substantial surplusa to fund stakes subsidies. But it makes no mention of all the other South Island harness racing venues, and all the owners and trainers in Canterbury who are the true harness racing participants making a commitment to this venture. Unless the stakes subsidy model is fixed by HRNZ in their announcement of the new industry strategy next month, the siphoning off of millions of $ every year from the Canterbury recing community to fund racing especially in the North Island will continue, and the cost to Canterbury may increase. In 4 more years the re-alignment when Entain's commitment period ends under this calendar structure will likely be truly painful for everyone. -
There are none so blind as those who cannot see. CMN provides real data for those who understand betting and industry returns, ie, stakes, Just imagine if he was in a prominent HRNZ role as opposed to the muppets running the place in the last 2 decades

It is obvious that our handicapping/rating system is not fit for purpose, when you have races where more than half the field is over 10 lengths away from the winner, it is not good for punters or owners. If Entain want to give money to the breeders of 2yo winners, that's fine, grab it, but HRNZ who are paying the stakes, should never have agreed to the small fields. I think that 70% of the breeder bonus's will end up going to sales vendors, their breeding decisions are made by the strength of the yearling sales rather than "can i get a return on my investment when I go to races". I did see some figures last year that suggested 80% of breeders have ownership of a racehorse, so the stake for the first win is more important than some maybe bonus. Last Friday ATC had 10 races, and only 78 horses, that is an average field size of 7.8, 5 of the races did not pay a 3rd place dividend , and 7 races were won by the favorite. The only thing that MIGHT save the betting revenue from being a total loss, would be Mach Shard being 11/12 in the betting and beating the two hotshots. And they want to give them 14 more meetings!

I personally believe for the NPC to survive, NZ need to have about 10 teams covering the whole country, and then maybe bring in those Aussie teams as well, remember NPC is played same time as internationals then below that have Heartland Comp where a lot of smaller unions merge as well, Rugby simply can't afford all these unions, hard to justify a place for Southland, Manawatu the same, some of these small unions only have 3 clubs and the Rugby Union is funding then, can they afford it ? For Rugby to move forward it needs to let go of some traditions, Poverty Bay/East Coast and West Coast Buller, Wanganui/King Country have played together before against touring teams so they either move forward or die. Redraw the boundaries.

I think you are right about the state of the track, with the last quarter being only 29 seconds, which is ridiculous for this class of horse for a mile, Crystal had the right horse in the right place.

Only 12 teams in Super Rugby comp.eight finalists make it a joke.Used to be a time when NZers said Aus had too many teams, maybe it's Nz who have too many teams now. -
That Highlanders Force match last night was a very poor game, I actually thought the Force showed more enterprise, I suspect the Crusaders will be higher in the end on the table than the Highlanders, but spare a thought, 7 6 indicates a very poor match, go back to the good old days, 6 3 and 9 3 were very common scores at all levels, yet grounds were packed out for many matches. 8 teams making the playoffs seems weird, I think 6 with second lives for the top 2 would suffice, same for the NPC.

Remember, it was the Aussies that gave him all the hype in the first place, now they're backtracking.
