N1MUE 1,877 Report post Posted February 23, 2015 Usually when you're drawn to play the team coming 10th of 10 in a competition you'd be licking your chops and can't wait to unleash the Joker. But no way are we Mighty Blues getting "sucked in" to that one ...not when the 10th out of 10 team is the well-credentialed and talent-laden 'Stags'. Having gone within a whisper of taking down the table-topping Hurrricanes last Saturday, I'm suspecting the Stags are too dangerous for us to go reaching for the Joker. No, I've got a couple of teams "lined up" in my mind for our Joker play. All will be revealed in the fullness of time. Will be the topic of discussion at our next Blues 'Cabinet' meeting. Meantime, no Blues Joker this Saturday. Item 2 on the agenda after the captaincy? Timely win at the weekend - might buy you another week. You know when we're playing our joker Howie - pleased to hear you're thinking about reciprocating this time! LastOf40

Chestnut 3,171 Report post Posted February 23, 2015 They are saying now that some rain is expected on Saturday afternoon at Eden Park for the cricket so will probably get some at Ellerslie too - could make it interesting. Not sure how much water they are putting on the track over this week.
Peter Jenkins 2,120 Report post Posted February 23, 2015 Calcs above are correct I think Cubes is a closet bookie and John is definitely an Accountant Pete are you going to do the finals in the same format as Spring? Good question Maria. The Finals Series this will not be a McIntyre system job drawn out over 4 weeks but instead a straight-forward semi-Finals and Grand Finals version over just 2 weekends. It will work like this: Sat Mar 28 (Sires Produce & Awapuni Gold Cup Day at Awapuni + BMW Stakes & Vinery Stakes day at Rosehill) Last round of Round Robin series. Top 4 teams from Round Robin series qualify for Finals playoff. Next 4 teams qualify for Presidents Play-off (5th-8th places). Last two teams qualify for Wooden Spoon showdown. Sat Apr 4 (Te Aroha Breeders Stakes meeting + ATC Derby, Doncaster (& 2 other Gr1s) at Randwick) Championship Semi-Finals Match A - 1st v 4th Match B -2nd v 3rd Presidents Play-offs Match C - 5th v 8th Match D- 6th v 7th Wooden Spoon 9th v 10th Sat Apr 11 (Easter Cup Day at Riccarton + QE II Stakes, Sydney Cup, ATC Oaks (& 1 other Gr1) at Randwick) Championship Grand Final Winners Matches A & B 3rd place play-off Losers Matches A & B Presidents Grand Final (5th place playoff) Winners Matches C & D 7th place playoff Losers Matches C & D Wooden Spoon battle terminates 9th v 10th All the above matches are straight-forward head-to-heads with no bonus points except for the Wooden Spoon which will be a head-to-head across two weeks with a separate draw for each week. In the event of a tie then overall aggregate will decide the Wooden Spoon winner. Chestnut and Kundalini
Von Cettes 685 Report post Posted February 23, 2015 I actually like the new format PJ A wooden spoon is a good idea, no one wants to win the spoon it adds a bit of incentive for the bottom two, are you sure you want to introduce the Spoon for this comp Looking forlorn for us Stags to make the top 4.......5 matches left if we won 4 matches with 2 point victories that would only put us on 10pts. Team Blues 5 races at Ellerslie this week for you guys Ceasar Romero is on his way. Peter Jenkins
Peter Jenkins 2,120 Report post Posted February 23, 2015 Yes Ian, the top 4 only qualifying makes it very competitive. One match is all most teams can afford in which to slip up between now and the end of March. Could be a tricky Ellerslie if the predicted rain comes Thursday and Friday. Melbourne has rain forecast for Sunday so they may get lucky with a perfect track for the Blue Diamond. Von Cettes

Peter Jenkins 2,120 Report post Posted February 24, 2015 Wow hard to believe the Blue Diamond has come around again, the years seem to fly by as you get older, No doubt you will be running the eye over the race a few times PJ could be a potential stallion in amongst the field. Hard to believe it was 15 years ago since this particular horse who had only won the 1 race 7 days previously came out and blew them away in the BD, I wonder where it ended up Well the one that won it 16 years ago is in a paddock about 200 metres from where I'm sitting. The moment was not lost on me during the Talindert Stakes last week as Stay With Me came wobbling home rather smartly, that her dam's dad had won the same race 16 years earlier. Another Blue Diamond winner - Alinghi (in foal to Snitzel) - is also on the farm just across the main drive. Yes every colt in every stakes race comes under my scrutiny. Deep Field's disappointing effort Saturday was a significant moment in assessing his value. Vancouver is creating plenty of interest for me at the moment. Of course our next two stallions are almost certainly going to be Scissor Kick (wide draw gave him little chance last week in what is essentially a lead-up race) and Panzer Division (slightly disappointing on Saturday given his 2nd up record). Interestingly I sent a mare to Redoute's Choice in his first year to stud (2000) as I thought he was going to be a very good stallion. She was an Irish-bred Woodman daughter of an El Gran Senor mare named Buncrana. The bay colt she left to RC was fairly ordinary with poor legs and his yearling price at the Karaka Sales of $40k didn't really recover our costs as we had paid A$33k for the RC service. The colt (later gelded) was named Time and Moment and after being purchased by David Ellis made his debut at Taupo beating subsequent Group 1 performer Manten. His next start was in the $400k NZB Classique Bonus race at Te Rapa (remember that ?) which gave us a big buzz and I think a breeders bonus of $10k just for having a runner. He ran last (!) although the field included Sir Slick, Clifton Prince, Iflooxcouldkill, Manten and subsequent 1000 Guineas winner Clean Sweep (another current Arrowfield resident mare). In his next start Time and Moment failed at The Bay and when he next appeared he had been sent South to Kathryn Thomson's stable at Rangiora. Amazingly it took him 2 years and umpteen starts to break his South Island duck winning at Riccarton over 1600m as a 4yo. His next win took another two years to materialize when he ran 1.8.8 down the 1200m shoot to win as a 6yo. He backed up to win at Riccarton again 13 days later and then almost a year later added another victory, again at Riccarton this time over 1600m for Tasha Collett beating Showusyahalo. A sixth and final win came as a 7yo at Riccarton over 2000m in the hands of Daniel Stackhouse. It took him 72 starts over 6 years to win just $51k in stakemoney so no one got rich off him at any point. The year after we sold him at Karaka we offered a Singspiel half-brother and ironically did much better with him fetching $170k to a buyer from Hong Kong where he eventually ended up after 4 straight city placings in Melbourne for Brian Jenkins (no relation). He won 4 races and HK$2.4m in Hong Kong where he was hilariously named "The Goodies" ! We later sold Buncrana to Westbury Stud who bred Kingnadim (by Elnadim) who twice won the Johnson Country Cup at Oakbank and also ran 3rd in an Alice Springs Cup. The mare's last foal is named Wait and See and is a Thano 3yo filly. She was last seen when running 2nd as a 2yo at Oamaru last June having been placed 5th in the Champagne Stakes at Riccarton 2 starts previously. My greatest regret with Buncrana was that when we bought her in Kentucky we put her in foal to no less than the USA Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew. Unfortunately for us and Three Chimneys farm (with whom this was a foal-share venture) she slipped the foal at the farm in Karaka about nine months into her pregnancy. It would have been the only Seattle Slew ever born in NZ and would have been a massive attraction at Karaka (it was a southern-hemisphere time foal). Anyway enough lunchtime rambling...
