Igniting a potential trade war

The tariffs could lead to potentially much higher costs, disrupted supply chains and the loss of jobs. In a call with reporters Saturday, a Trump administration official said any retaliation from Mexico, China or Canada would likely result in even higher tariffs for that country. Even Trump acknowledged the potential for adverse consequences on American consumers.

“There could be some temporary, short-term disruption, and people will understand that,” Trump said Friday when pressed by reporters on the cost of tariffs being passed on to importers and, by extension, consumers. “But the tariffs are going to make us very rich and very strong — and we’re going to treat other countries very fairly.”

Hours after Trump’s action, Trudeau announced retaliatory 25% tariffs on US goods, that will be “far-reaching and include everyday items,” making good on his promise that Canada would retaliate forcefully and swiftly if the United States imposed levies. The country’s trade representatives met with Trump administration officials as recently as Friday in an attempt to stave off the tariffs.

“Tonight, I am announcing Canada will be responding to the US trade action with 25% trade tariffs against $155 billion worth of American goods,” the Canadian leader said in a news conference Saturday night. “This will include immediate tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods as of Tuesday, followed by further tariffs on $125 billion of American products in 21 days’ time, to allow Canadian companies and supply chains to seek to find alternatives.”

Trump has repeatedly said “tariff” is among his favorite words and sees import duties as a way to finance the extension of his first-term tax cuts that are due to expire in 2026.

"We don’t want to have this fight, but we won’t lose it," candidate for Canadian prime minister says on tariffs

From CNN’s Michael Rios

Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s former finance minister who is running to replace Justin Trudeau as prime minister, told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria that her country is determined to stand up for itself after US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China.

“We don’t want to have this fight, but we are not going to lose it,” she said Sunday.

Freeland called the tariffs a “terrible” idea and a “lose-lose” situation that will end up hurting Americans since they depend on Canada for many basic goods.

“The president has decided now to make gas in the United States more expensive. He’s decided to make groceries in the United States more expensive. And our retaliation is going to cost Americans jobs. That is completely ridiculous. We do not want to do this,” she said.

Freeland also said Canadian citizens have been so hurt and angered that some have already started to boycott American goods.

“Regular Canadians across the country are coming up with ways to stand for Canada, to fight for Canada, to defend Canada, but mostly to say to our American neighbors: ‘Guys, just cut it out,’” Freeland said.

Asked whether Canada would start looking for new markets and trading partners, Freeland said the country would prefer to continue working with the US but insisted the relationship should remain mutually beneficial.

“We are happy to work together. But it’s got to be a two-way street,” she said.

Trump can't loose on this one if things get really rough he has these stats to give him confidence , this will cost Canada much more than the USA .In 2023, the United States trade balance for goods and services with Canada was a deficit of -$41 bn USD.

Crazy really when all the Canadians have to do is control their boarder and the problems will be resolved .(maybe)

Well easily the best thing to come out of Stornoway is their black pudding , certainly not some ancestor of the Fuckwit .

Go and ask the people of Aberdeen where he built a golf course if they would welcome back , he would likely get cut up and buried on his course . Then go and ask the people of Stornoway if they claim him as one of their own .

As I said the Scots area smart people , smart enough to see through a loud mouth charlatan .

You know the old adage of "better to be thought an idiot than open your mouth and confirm it", way too late for you , fool .

The orange bully having to back down, yet again. Canada certainly won’t.

That's desperate Hokey and now the truth , a clean sweep to Trump .

“Canada has agreed to ensure we have a secure northern border, and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like fentanyl that have been pouring into our country,” he said.

Talks on final deals would continue with both countries, Trump said.

Trudeau said after the “good call” that Canada would deploy nearly 10,000 frontline officers to help secure the border, list drug cartels as terrorists, appoint a “fentanyl tsar” and crack down on money laundering.
