Ponderosa8 the only reference I can find to a ST Phillips is an apprentice jockey with Jim Cochrane at Gore. He won on Vanity Queen at Tuapeka on the 8/4/39.

Thanks Gubes.

I wonder if you'd be able to look up a horse called     Mont D'Or

(I have a photo on the wall of the horse. Owned by my Granddad W Growcott and ridden by S T Phillips. The photo wasnt actually of a race, but Dad in his silks and colours on the horse. That would go back to the late 30's or 40's too)

Ponderosa8 Mont d'Or was a ch c bred in 1948 by Isaac Of York out of the Hunting Song mare Gay Doll bred by Mrs RE Growcott. He raced 41 times for 2 wins. At 2 he won once from 3 starts- his second start at Hastings on the 30/9/50 over 4f ridden and trained by ST Phillips at Hastings for BC, WC and WH Growcott. At 3 he had 8 starts for one second. At 4 he won 1 from 16 starts- Hastings on the 3/1/53 over 6f ridden by Cleve Mackie and then owned by CHR Jensen and trained by SM McNaughton at Woodville. At 5 he had three unplaced runs owner-trained by SH Walker. At 6 he had 11 starts for 1 second and 1 third for owner RI Calder and trained by JD Frew at Te Rapa.

Ponderosa8 I cant find any information about ST Phillips and the Tapanui Cup. Tapanui didn't have a tote meeting between the 1940-41 and 1944-45 seasons. They may have run non-tote races in those seasons. Perhaps he won the Tapanui Cup in one of those seasons.

My older brother in Foxton Beach just happened to read the thread.... and he rang me to say he has the cup in his trophy cabinet at home.

It was the Tapanui Cup from 1937. Its just says presented to the winning rider but doesnt say who the horse was or anything like that...

Ponderosa8 yes the race was actually called the Tapanui Handicap of £100 and Cup valued at £6/6/- .The winner was Island Linnet carrying 7.2 ridden by ST Phillips and owner trained by TG Pollock from Gore. Won by 3l from Cleaner and JW Dooley. The date was 6/2/37. Island Linnet was a br m by Songbird out of Unawed.

Thanks very much Gubellini for all the information you've provided.    I actually had no idea how many winners he rode/trained at all..

fun fact gubellini ..island linnet was the grandam of none other than tulloch and trained in gore...tommy pollock was also the victim of a devistating stable fire in 1961 losing around 8 horses and he unfortunatly died less than 9months later..john messent was his apprentice at the time if i recall

I've been following the other comments on here with interest and perhaps my original question about NZTR providing old race results is a bit redundant now when we have someone like Gubellini with such a wealth of information at his fingertips! Much appreciated, and I know others on here appreciate it as well. I've been searching through old results and various racing stories from The Press at Paperspast online, and appreciate the tip from Mastercraftsman on this. Regards the 1977 Kumara Gold Nuggets, I even found a story on Godsend and her only foal who went to England as a Chaser, and other stories on horses like General Simm, Meldie, Superspan, Butch, Kowhai Glen, just to name a few.

elbow Island Linnet won 8 races from 89 starts. Her first win was at her 19th start- Winton over 6f on the 2/12/33 ridden by N. McLellan. Her second and third wins came on the same day at Birchwood on the 17/3/34 over 6f and 7f both times ridden by H Phillips. Her last win was also at Birchwood on the 15/5/37 over 10f again ridden by H Phillips. I didn't realise she was the grandam of Tulloch!

Island Linnet's daughter Florida (dam of Tulloch) won 4 races from 58 starts remarkably all at Avondale. She won her maiden at her 11th start over 1m on the 16/7/49. Then on the 23/7/49 over 1m then the Avondale Cup 11f on the 2/9/50 and then over 11f on the 7/7/51. Owned by Dave Blackie and trained at Cambridge by Wally Pratt and ridden in all four wins by Mark Martinovich.

Hi Swoopa

Spanish Countess ( bless her)

was the dam of the unforgettable incomparable  (imo) El Kara

a tough old warrior who pushed on through three ( seemingly) career ending injuries and gave us thrills of a lifetime both as a racehorse in the 80's and as a leisure horse in the 90's

Eight memorable wins, he carted us up and down the country but it was his resilience and ability to slowly work his way back into form after those injuries which makes him my Hero forever

Looks like Spanish Countess stayed in and around Palmerston North for her breeding career, initially at Noel Pollard's Stud beside Linton Army Camp then visited other local stallions

I remember El Kara Roger! Great to hear you had so much fun as an owner. He was a tough horse.

Speaking to my mother the other day, she recalls Spanish Countess showed some ability in trackwork and jumpouts, but recieved a career ending injury before getting to the races.

Thanks Gubes you are a legend!

My grandfather loved his horses and leased about 5/6 acres of railway land (for tuppence) over the back of the of the Waipa course by the 600m mark. He worked at the dairy factory and pottered around with one or two over the years and wasn't shy of selling when the money was on the table. My mother reckons he only had a horse in work so he could chat with Bill Sanders each morning!
