Have thought exactly the same thing Murray. I,too, am cynical but of geologists and seismologists (sp). We put millions if not billions of $$$$ into research to these guys. They say "this isn't the BIG one, but the big one could come at any time." They can tell us the intensity, the length, the depth and all sorts of info AFTER the event, but are unable to give us so much as thirty seconds warning. To add to my cynicism it's apparently about the Australian and New Zealand plates. Who cares about the plates, we've won the CUP.
