While proven Classic-division horses get set to meet in the Pegasus World Cup (G1), several horses that could become major division players are getting their year started Jan. 18 in the $175,000 Louisiana Stakes (G3) at Fair Grounds.View the full article -

That is exactly the problem , if NZTR has to work with 50% of turnover then stakes will plummet and with that ownership , struggling trainers will go to the wall . Then we will be in a position where we will become a Hong Kong type industry . Big Owners , big trainers in and exclusive club .

Wouldn’t be holding your breath on that one WD. With declining attendances, betting turnover and horse populations the “golden renaissance” may be sweet, but short. I have yet to see any strategic plan for the industry AFTER the Entain funding dries up.

Well said , the current funding model appears to coming from a substantial handout . There's a reason they don't publish turnovers any more , they would prove the discussion that turnover isn't sustaining current stake levels . Now they may well have a secret plan that none of us are privy to and it will prove all the doubters wrong , and I loke you bloody well hope they do prove us wrong . And to be honest if in another 3 1/2 years they stay on and stakes stay or improve then I honestly don't care how they are funding the bigger stakes . The thing they have to work on in coming years is increasing owner and horse numbers , something that at present appears to be stagnating .

Yes. Well said. There seems to be no sign of the industry trying to return itself to such a sustainable state. What's more, I fail to see how it was a good idea to come to an arrangement that will require racing to survive on 50% of the revenue from turnover for the next 20 years, when they couldn't manage on all of it. -

I grew up in an era when stakes were largely funded by turnovers. With a bit thrown in from sponsorship and gate-takings. Now we live in an era when turnovers have plummeted and stakes have boomed. And there is virtually no outside sponsorship (with the TAB sponsoring most big races) and most meetings have free entry, because hardly anyone goes anyhow. I know some people think this is great and we can carry on like this forever, but people of a certain age with some industry experience have got no idea how it works under this new model and how long we can carry on like this. We may well all be totally wrong, and we may be on the verge of a boom time and the industry possibly has never been better. I just hope most of us are wrong and the industry is in great hands. -

It can but it seems a long way for them to get a similar monopoly for online gaming in NZ. They already have a big share of the NZ market for that and it's not proposed to make online gambling offered by overseas operators illegal. I can hardly see the NZ operators likes of Sky City or Christchurch Casino standing still to allow that. Don't think it would be feasible. Entain should do fine with the racing and sports betting deal as it is. -
Maybe Bernese is going to jump Anhedonia this winter? Teak was 15 when he won the 1974 HB Steeplechase. Biform 14 when he won the 1940 Pakuranga Hunt Cup. Kanamint was12 when he won the same race in 1985. Lord Zirito was 12 when he won the 1995 GN Hurdles. Dozie Boy was 12 when he won the 1944 GN Steeplechase. Ascona was 12 when he won the same race in 1979.

That's quite true but I can't help feeling that the end aim is the online gaming. Legislation can be changed, can it not? -
Thats been my point all along. Its where the money is and dealing with one jurisdiction is far more profitable than multiple Ozzie states for starters

At the moment, their licence doesn't extend to online gaming does it, and that would not be part of the current deal that funds racing?
