Sadly broke down mid-race. Thoughts to all connections. -

And the introductory special promotion already has received better coverage/cut-through than any other advertising re the introduction of FO Quinellas. Smart work by the TAB getting this exposure ! Quinella is a popular bet option. -

When Chris Rutten selects and buys a Savabeel colt lot 194, out of a group one winner and the stud has given the colt the number 8 brand for $120,000 , you know the sale is struggling. Chris could not believe his "luck". -
Yep, I'm sure the vendors of the unsold and bottom half of the draft will be delighted about the "bargains"! Using the "average" as a reflection of how the Sale has gone is not that valid when there are a couple of aberrant sales at the top end IMO. As for the NZB guy, of course they are going to talk it up just like any horse, house or car salesman! Let's just wait for tomorrow but all I know is that Day One results were not of Book One standard from my recollection of sales over the last several decades.

Pre-race blood testing was carried out. Routine alcohol testing of drivers was carried out prior to racing with horsemen B Butt and B Orange both providing results in excess of the permitted level. Both drivers were consequently stood down from their engagements. Information's were filed with the JCA and adjourned. -
The average was only down $5k and percentage sold is similar to last year after Day One. The NZB guy I saw interviewed said most people are saying the quality is better in day 2 & 3 --that could be just sales talk, but we will see. Given the problems of people getting to NZ etc. I think it is going OK. Having said that there were some bargains to be had eg. Te Akau picked a nice Belardo colt (Lot 118) for $40k

Unfortunately for many breeders today was a train wreck--76 of the presented 180 yearlings sold or were passed in for $60K or less (hardly Book 1 credentials) and I suspect most of the passings were run up to one bid below reserve so who knows what they may have truly sold for. Rogie had a big throw at the stumps, HK bought only a few and all in all, from my perspective anyway the results were very disappointing, considering the number of entries this year is down 20% to start with. We will have to see what tomorrow brings but those 10K maiden stakes obviously not tempting owners.☹️

From all accounts the BGP group had a massive day out and made some $$ via bonus bets. Lots of moans from the usuals about no restrictions on them and BGP getting preferential treatment from TAB. Go to a supermarket every week and see how many loss leader products are on the shelves.

The horse was owned by Mr & Mrs Gibbs, L. Pilcher and M. Purdon when it was branded. Perhaps Vicki Rasmussen bought it, or a share in it? Unfortunately, the Harness Australia database does not include the horses owners. -

I tried to get to Kumara twice but both times it was washed out or invaded by wild pigs ! The odd bridge was washed away so when I tried for a third time the family reminded we had had 2 x vehicles and caravans washed away down the river so we settled for the Westport trots where the weather usually OK along with the Nelson trots where weather great and an all-weather track. -
Runs tonight in HK on path to Derby , Casper Fownes trains , Gelded now , has a win already in HK . Now called Enrich Delight

Melbourne Cup results were always a big deal back when you a toddler........most of NZ rejoiced when NZ trifectad the great race when 3 x Kiwis finished almost in line......the story went Hi Jinx was playing Howsie ,fell off the chair and got a lump fff !.......Illumquh trained by Eric Ropiha also ran a second and Ropiha trained Fans for 3rd too. Other prominent 3rds with Kiwi interest would be Phar Lap.My neighbour Joe Brown [Otago] got 3rd with Reformed ,a Wellington Cup winner. His brother Jim won the 1965 Auckland Cup with Lucky Son who he briefly gave to jockey Bill Skelton to campaign. Other memorable 3rds were Castletown and Ben Lomond. In your teens you may remember Kythera behind Van Der Hum in the wet and Na Botto behind Empire Rose. Even more memorable was Second Coming behind Brew ,denying MMoroney a great feat , and of course Xcellent behind Makybe Diva in the greatest race of all. More recently C'est La Guerre and Who Shot the Barman did Nz proud with 3rds and we will claim some connection with So You Think ! Then there is your favourite Jockey MWalker on Prince of Arran ,then improved to second the following cup ,then 3rd again in 2020 with new rider. -
its normal procedure for the President of the United States to get a 21 gun salute directly after the president is sworn in at the Inauguartion i wonder why this time... they changed it??

Given the lack of physical offshore buyers the K1 sale is heading towards being a disaster for many vendors from what i have observed. Anyone see it differently but either way i would not want to be a K2 vendor
