  1. Certainly is about weight & big difference between vests we just discovered. Were going to get a viper, but it's 400gms heavier than a Hows vest. Both approved standard.
  2. We went. Prices were where we expected - not alot, but wasn't billed as a top end sale. Plenty of opportunity to buy in the hundreds of dollars range not thousands. Sure plenty of the offering will go well given a chance. You could probably get the results from David Howarth - Elders Livestock. palacelodge@clear.net.nz
  3. Hi Dee, Change your shoeing will certainly help. Tuffrock poultice is good to get rid of the bruising & doesn't matter if there's any broken skin. No race with hold either. We use double velcro fastening bellboots on any horses that might strike their heels during trackwork/training. Have trialed with them with no problems too.
  4. We've had heaps of our sport horse with this (annoying!!) habit over the years. Got worse once we started free jumping them alot. On the plus side they've done very well SJ!! Has been an issue with many going to small blocks, post & rail etc. Coming out of big hill country, even the well behaved ones for us, have jumped out with new owners - have issues with smaller boundaries! Re Comparison with TB's. They don't seem to be so motivated to fence jump. They've always either respected the fences & stayed in their paddock, or failed to get over them & cost $$$$'s to fix. Our 2 Brilliance fillies are an exception. They're happy to jump & do it cleanly - but not too often, which is just fine!
  5. very sad news indeed. We had alot of horses from Wally, including Mick Curtis.. He was so pleased that Mick got to sire some foals before his untimely demise. Condolences to the family.
  6. Hi Basilica, Glad you posted, had lost your contact details. Maybe email me, best way of keeping in touch meersbrooke@xnet.co.nz Love for you to call in & catch up. The filly's doing well. Just chillin in the snow at present!!! Had a bit of re-educating to do re tying up & few other basics, but getting there. Plenty of time though....not planning to race her until she's a 3yo anyway. Interested in Berri's interpretation of the OCC temperament. They don't strike me as impudent. Yes I can see that they could throw their toys.....but, they're like our Brilliance fillies (& most horses). Just need clear simple instructions, and time to process the request without being hassled. Our OCC took ALL the majestic staff to help load her after the sale in the dark, & she performed rearing, bolting off, you name it. Next day we had time to spend at our overnight stop. She was waiting for a fight....we let her just look & didn't hassle or pressure her, on in a few minutes & no fuss since.
  7. Thanks Hedley.e sure hope so....& if not, she's sooooo pretty it won't matter!!!
  8. We just liked the OCC type, great build - could have sold ours many times over already as a sport horse! Not worried by horses that take time & patience - have plenty of both. Plan to hack ours out for a while once broken -in & get it out to shows for 'life experience' over the summer. Think it'll stand a better chance of racing well if it just learns to be a horse first..... She came with a bit of bagage about handling....so just chilling out with older mares & learning some social skills. Works wonders!
  9. Really interested reading this post. We bought a One Cool Cat filly at the May sale & the thoughts posted here re producing them, echo our thoughts exactly. Ours is a great type, but bit highly strung and it would be very easy to knock her confidence. Ours is out of Herron Bay (By Wallenda (Gulch) out of Western Symphony mare). Any thoughts on how this cross should match up??
  10. We've just leased City for the next few breeding seasons. So his new home is now the Kawhatau Valley near Mangaweka for anyone interested in using him.
  11. Finally a stud thinking about future in a productive way. Good on them!
  12. Agree. Without your own grazing it's not so attractive.
  13. Agree with you Blue about the three generations of unraced mares.....and that won't change unless people are prepared to keep & race fillies..... As for taking a punt at $100....most horses are a punt regardless of price. But if they're well conformed & good natured you can't go too wrong, even if they're too slow as race horses.
  14. You're right re transport!! It cost more than double the purchase price to get the fillies home. But no regrets about buying them - incl the stunning now 2yo Keep the Faith filly also for $100. Since we bought the girls, several now have better looking pedigrees, with siblings now old enough to race - winning. At least with fillies you always have options if they get injured.... Oh & this year.....we're taking our own truck!
