  1. Racing.Com. Andrew Eddy The dream of running Verry Elleegant in a Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe has ended but Australia's champion race mare could still finish her remarkable racing career on the international stage. Trainer Chris Waller confirmed via Twitter on Wednesday that plans to run in the Arc had been shelved but that a 2400-metre Group 1 fillies and mares race on Champions Day at Ascot in mid-October remains a genuine option for the rising seven-year-old mare. "Whilst running her in the Arc would be a dream come true for all of us, we just felt that it would come around too soon to enable her to have a proper spell and be fully prepared in Australia for this assignment," Waller tweeted. "However, a trip to Europe later in the spring is still strongly on the cards providing she returns to the form she showed in the spring when dominating the Melbourne Cup. "The race that we have identified as a prospective target is the 2400-metre G1 fillies and mares race on Champions Day at Ascot (October 15), one of the most prestigious race days in the world and a worthy stage to showcase her talents. "It is likely that she will have three runs in the spring with the Winx Stakes, Chelsmford, Kingston Town and the Underwood all being considered prior to a decision being made on a Melbourne Cup defense or a trip to Europe." If she was to go to England, Verry Elleegant would be unlikely to return to Australia to race again, with the mare likely to go to a Northern Hemisphere stallion over the new year.
  2. Champion ‘chaser Zed Em has been officially retired after taking his first race fall at Pakenham on Monday. Trainer Patrick Payne confirmed the news on Tuesday via an Instagram post: ‘’Jumped like an angel until his only mistake. We admire his bravery, determination and durability. Thanks for the ride. You will have a good home and happy retirement.’’ Zed Em was to be lining up for his fifth consecutive Grand Annual Steeplechase at Warrnambool in two weeks, but it was decided that no chances were to be taken with the 11-year-old after a rare mistake at the second last fence in the Spencer Steeplechase on Monday. Zed Em was taken to the Werribee Veterinary hospital after the fall to have any injuries assessed and although he came through the potentially disastrous fall, it was decided that, after more than seven years of racing, his time had come. The Kiwi galloper, who was trained in New Zealand by Kevin Myers in between his trips to Australia, won the Grand Annual in 2019 and has been placed at his other three attempts. He also won three Von Doussa Steeplechases (2017, 2018 and 2019) and was a two-time winner of the Great Eastern Steeplechase (2018, 2019) at Oakbank. He ends his career after 60 starts, where he won 17 races and had 13 placings for earnings of $1.134 million. Andrew Eddy. Racing.com

  9. Equimillion Launched – $1m Equestrian Event For Retired Thoroughbred Racehorses It was today announced that Racing NSW will be launching an equestrian event with a minimum of $1 million in prizemoney exclusively for retired Thoroughbred racehorses called Equimillion. Equimillion will showcase the versatility and suitability of Thoroughbreds for careers outside of racing, with the inaugural event to be held on the October long weekend in 2023. The $1 million plus in prizemoney on offer at Equimillion will be distributed across a range of disciplines and classes in the biggest two-day equestrian event ever to be held in NSW. The Equimillion competition will include eventing, show jumping, dressage and showing with a particular focus on amateur competitors. Ahead of the event, Racing NSW will host an auction for recently retired Thoroughbred racehorses, with those horses being purchased at the auction being eligible to compete at Equimillion. “Equimillion will become the go to event for equestrian competitors in all disciplines,” said Racing NSW Chief Executive, Peter V’landys AM. “It has the potential to carry more than the $1 million in prizemoney and in time will be not only a major equestrian event, but a major event for NSW with competitors coming from all states of Australia,” Mr V’landys AM added. Further information regarding the Equimillion auction and event will be announced shortly. For more information email equimillion@racingnsw.com.au
