  1. Not sure what you are getting at here, but the Stipes charged her for foul language in the weighing room. It's not a good look when someone is losing their rag and only just started on the comeback trail.
  2. Joe has just finished the Irish season with Aidan O'Brien . He is only 26 and has his weight stabilised now and can ride 54 comfortably. He has ridden 186 winners in Ireland and England and took a break from race riding for a year to work in a Ready to Run Stable in USA. He comes from a very well known Racing family in Ireland .
  3. Sincere condolences to the family. As a newcomer to training many years ago Denny would always take time to talk to me. I always admired him for that. Trevor McKee and Denny were both from the same mould. Absolute champions for racing!
  4. I never caught the Weigh In programme and I probably should not comment as no doubt I am going to piss a few people off. However I think there are a few things that are never mentioned regarding the state of the industry. All I hear is that the stakes are too low and it is driving owners out of the game. That is true but not the entire story . Owners are getting stuffed up the chutney left right and centre ( to quote my good mate Leo!) Not all of it from the powers that be. Some of these so called" top trainers" are charging anywhere from 85/day to 100/day, clipping their tickets on chiropractor charges, jump out fees, administration charges, vitamin charges, gear charges, and whatever they can think of. They cry poverty but still manage to take a holiday to Hawaii, Fiji , world cruise or whatever once a year. They drive an Audi or other luxury car a, have a big TAB punting account etc. As they read this they know who they are. They get away with it by forming syndicates . Some of the Cambridge Trainers have between 55 and and 140 horses in their stables so don't let me hear them crying poverty at the rates they are charging! Throw in some of the vets, and farriers that charge like wounded bulls and you have an industry that is in shit street not all of it at the feet our administrators. In saying that NZTR still have a lot to answer for. Like them or loathe them, Race Course Inspectors, J McKenzie, B McKenzie and the the like seemed to police the industry without all the cost that is now happening. NZTR have around 30 personal policing the industry (and a policy of dob your mates in) . NZTR programme trials at Ruakaka or Avondale so an owner with a horse in Cambridge is up for between 350 and 500 in transport costs alone. The big stables don't care as they have a syndicate horse or big money owner. It appears that people are employed at NZTR in vital positions but have no real empathy at what it is really like out here. They have no idea of the costs involved when they do the programmes. Meanwhile there are a lot of trainers trying to keep owners in the game by charging affordable training fees and no hidden charges so big ups to them!
  5. We would be the first to pull the pin if we had a dangerous horse. Jockey's and Track work riders are our life blood. Without them there is no racing industry. I respect their courage and never cease to admire them. The talented ones, the battlers , they all deserve our respect. This is a dangerous sport . They put their lives on the line every day. Rugby, Boxing, League participants run a distant second in my view.
  6. Hi Barry, The problem is and I will probably step on toes here, the Stipe's do need to be better at what they do. Given that they need to get a report out as soon after the meeting has finished, they rush and don't give out the information as it has happened. Too many times I have read reports and nothing has been mentioned about incidents that are really quite important. In Livingston's case it is fair to say that on the face of it she is a problem horse. You and the others that have commented can only remark on what is in front of you. Even today I had a lady come and tell me about Livingston and how the Trainers couldn't get anyone to ride it and never told Rogan what it was like. She nearly dropped through a crack in the floor when I told her we trained it. She then told me it was relayed to her in the company of others here in Cambridge. Scooby is right. Not easy being a Trainer!
  7. Firstly can I say we are gutted by what has happened to Rogan. As Trainers you feel like it is your fault when this happens. Like everyone else our first reaction was to blame the horse . Having now contacted Rogan and some of barrier attendants it appears it was a freak accident. Rogan's stirrup iron got stuck on a part of the starting gates as she was loading. The weight of the horse going forward caused the injuries. Rogan and the barrier attendants said it could have happened with any horse. The person that started this tread has had a crack about the horse previously so I want to set the record straight. Before the Taupo incident where she slipped onto her haunches as the gates were about to open, she had trialed 5 times and raced 6 times without incident. Why her back legs went under her we don't know. She did not throw herself over backwards as someone on here commented. At her next start she refused to load and this was probably a carry over from her Taupo experience. The Stipes requested she undergo an official barrier jump out. The barrier boys worked out how best to load her and she trialed at Cambridge without incident.( ridden by Margaret). Livingston then ran 4th with Kinjite on. At her following start Kinjite was dislodged NOT BY LIVINGSTON, but by the horse in the next barrier ridden by G Cooksley. That horse had played up in the birdcage and also at the barriers. It came out of the gates sideways and heavily bumped into Livingston causing Kinjite to fall off. This was not reported to the Stipes, much easier to blame Livingston as she had the reputation by now. Back to yesterday, because of the serious injuries suffered by Rogan the Stipes will carry out a thorough investigation into the incident and in particular how the stirrup iron became stuck in the starting gates .Perhaps there needs to be a modification done so it never happens again? Some of the comments on here (always under an alias) put an indirect slur on the Stipes and also on us as Trainers. In closing, yes Livingston can be difficult to load but there are plenty of other horses that need patience and extra care when loading. The barrier boys were getting her confidence back and this terrible accident had to happen with Livingston immediately getting the blame. It does nobody any good making uninformed and inflammatory remarks on a public forum. If any one wants to discuss this further with me then please do. My phone number is 021354588.. Tim Carter
  8. I have spoken to Marco and I can assure everybody he is absolutely sorry about what happened. He accepted full responsibility for the incident. The incident and subsequent negative publicity has not been good for him having just embarked on a career in NZ.He also received a disgusting facebook message wishing him likewise treatment which is now before the RIU. Mike Dillon's ridiculous article in the NZ Herald has been well dealt with by more knowledgeable writers earlier in the thread also. Marco's explanation of the incident to me was once he turned his horses head to come off the rail he heard Daniel call out.He turned around at that point.A combination of Ponderosa Miss bumping Nigelissama's hindquarter and Marco's actions caused Nigelissama to lose her balance. This made the incident more spectacular than it should have been.So the remarks by some that Marco purposely hooked his horse at right angles are not based on fact.I believe the Judicial Committee would have considered all this in handing down a 1 month suspension. Daniel wrote very well and he acknowledged Marco as a Senior Rider. 83 wins against the best Jockeys in the world is not an easy feat for an Apprentice in HK. A further 65 wins in Western Australia so taking that into account his ability is not in question. He showed poor judgement in that race. However it was not a deliberate action to hinder another horses chances. As a Trainer, I have sometimes wanted to boot a Jockey's backside for causing interference to one of my runners but usually that is based on sentiment and not always on fact. Marco Chui is a hard worker riding 12 or more horses a morning at the Cambridge Training Centre, He is quietly spoken and he presents himself and his gear always in immaculate condition. In my opinion he is an asset to our Jockey ranks He deserves to be criticized for causing this incident but not ridiculed by some unknown idiot calling him Chewy Chewy, and other abusive comments.
