  1. And the winner is....... Matt Cameron. Sorry to hear Jason won’t be riding.
  2. Wow! Who wants to ride the best horse in NZ?
  3. Good on him! This is what horse racing is all about. I’ve just read him and 4 of his mates paid US$40 each for a 1/4200 share in a 12.5% share of the winner. Aiden and his 4 mates literally own a hair within the tail of Authenticity but it doesn’t take away the fact that they are owners of the horse and congratulations to them. Not many people can claim they have owned a Kentucky Derby winner. Great story for racing.
  4. Indeed Tauhei. The G is magnificent. In fact, the sporting precinct as a whole is the best in the world and the fact that it’s a 5 minute walk from the heart of the city makes it the best location too. Getting back to the G, it’s steeped in history and the Australians do it so well, honouring their champions with a statue of the greats around the perimeter. Even Warney has his own statue! (he was always going to get one but I love how the Aussies don’t muck around). The Members is just an incredible viewing spectacle with the ultimate experience having everything catered for. And as we all know the Aussies LOVE TO PUNT. Every conceivable opportunity they are downstairs in the TAB having a bet. It’s an incredible atmosphere, whether it’s a cricket or an AFL match and having 70 or 80 thousand at the G week in week out is common place, especially for AGL games. You can’t top 105K screaming fans at an AFL Grand Final. It’s a bucket list item which needs to be experienced at least once in a lifetime.
  5. Indeed Uriah! Don’t worry, I’m well overdue and we’ve got plenty of bullets to fire in the coming months. Stick with me.
  6. Don’t feed the trolls Dockers. Your team played well the other night. Was a close game.
  7. Saturday 24th of October is set to become one of the biggest days in Australian sport. First to wet the appetite we have Australasia’s premier WFA race the Cox Plate then in a world first the AFL grand final will be played for the very first time in it’s history interstate at the Gabba and just to top it off it will be the first time ever that it will be played at night under lights!! The TV ratings will be through the roof and could very well set an all time record on the day! Just imagine Jennifer Eccles winning the Cox Plate followed by the Tiges winning the Grand Final to make it 3 out of the last 4?! How good would that be?!! Plenty to look forward to in the next couple of months. Spring racing is here people!
  8. Indeed Ohokaman. She ran a good third in her first trial up at Ruakaka (the old man drove up to see that one) and she looks to have improved with this one. I see Mick Guerin has been very bullish regarding Avantage winning the Tarzino for a long time now but judging by this latest trial it may not be as cut and dried as he thinks. Obviously she’ll be more potent up in distance but I wouldn’t be surprised if she knocks off the favourite with fresh legs. Looking forward to seeing her here in Melbourne for the Cox Plate.
  9. Indeed Ernie. I have developed an “iso addiction” of fine red wine. I’ve always had a penchant for a good red (Church Road Reserve was my fav when I lived in NZ) but lockdown this year has again brought my hobby to the fore. Need to find a faster horse than Mystic Journey though for this new expensive hobby!
  10. Well well well...... That was a bit like watching short stuff v Joseph Parker in a boxing match. No contest. Despite being Jane Ivil’s “pick of the yard” she very quickly started waving the white flag before the home turn had even been reached. The breeding barn awaits and with the Group 1 on the cv as well as the All Star Mile she’ll be a valuable broodmare. Not sure what to make of Rubisaki’s run. She didn’t show her customary turn of foot yesterday and may not have come up this time after a brutal previous campaign winning all those races. To make matters worse the Haselgrove Catkin McLaren Vale Shiraz I drank afterwards to drown my sorrows Very disappointing day indeed!
  11. Track is rated good today after a fair bit of rain yesterday. Stunning day in Melbourne with an even better day forecast tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing what Betty can do with a better draw and a good track. Currently paying $9.50 Fixed. Go you good thing!
  12. Absolutely Tom! Looking forward to seeing Rubisaki’s return tomorrow too. Mystic Journey into Rubisaki looks like a very good bet.
  13. And she draws perfectly at barrier 4 where as this time Savatino will need to come from barrier 11. Track currently rated soft although a bit of rain forecast for tomorrow with fine weather predicted for Friday and Saturday. Should definitely be a better track than they had last time. Go you good thing!
  14. With no rain and warmer weather forecast for the next few days there is an outside chance Caulfield could be racing on a good track come Saturday. With the improved track and a run under her belt, all she needs now is a soft draw to be competitive. Currently paying $9 Fixed the bookies are keeping her safe. Expect a much improved performance second up from Betty. Go you good thing!
  15. Will keep an eye out for Highclere Red Rum but I’m not prepared to write off Mystic Journey just yet. The race wasn’t run to suit and she was in the worst part of the track. She was actually strong through the line and easily held Regal Power the All Star Mile winner. A good track and better draw in the Memsie with see a much improved performance. Looking forward to seeing more of the promising horse resume in the coming weeks.
  16. I’ve looked at the replay a few times now and in my opinion it’s a complete forgive run for her. Billy pushed the button from gates where she sprinted around them 3 wide for a few hundred metres then pulled her back as the pace slackened then asked her for another effort as they sprinted turning for home. The muddling pace of the race didn’t suit her and she was in the worst part of the track where she still ran through the line and easily held Regal Power (last year’s All Star Mile winner). A year older she may also require another run fitness wise. Memsie in 2 weeks back on a good track with a better draw (fingers crossed) you should see a much improved effort. Write her off at your own peril. $11 Fixed odds just means we get a better price.
  17. You gotta love these “post race preachers”
  18. “Not really lived up to the hype”? Really? She’s one of only a handful of fillies to win the Australian Guineas in the last 30 years (Miss Finland and Mosheen the other two). She beat Hartnell and Alizee to win the All Star Mile as Ernie has already alluded to. She should’ve won the Makybe Diva (beaten by outsider Gatting who hasn’t won a race since). She’s won 2 Group 2’s, a couple of listed races and finished within 4 lengths of Lys Gracieux in the Cox Plate. Not to mention nearly $4 million in the bank. I’d say 11 wins from 19 starts is more than a pass mark.
  19. A glorious Winter’s day in Melbourne today after some over night rain. Track will be nice and loose to suit Betty perfectly where she is unbeaten on soft tracks (2 from 2). They’ve pushed her out slightly to $4.20 Fixed. Look for her to settle towards the rear half of the field before making her run out wide from the 600. Welcome back Mystic Journey!! Go you good thing!!
  20. Indeed Red Rum. The whole of Australia was on that horse from $6 into odds on. There was a very strong word early on the street for him and he delivered justifying that support. Rulership should also win tomorrow. He has strong form from last campaign and has trialled brilliantly. Hydro Star the spruik horse won impressively on debut but the time was not overly flash. Frosty should get the lead easy from a soft draw and dictate to them. Currently paying $3.10 Fixed. Other horses to keep an eye on are Russian Camelot who would have to be a massive chance in the Caulfield Cup and Surprise Baby who with any given luck this year should win the Melbourne Cup. Jennifer Eccles is paid up for the Cox Plate and she trialled reasonably well at Ruakaka recently. Look forward to seeing her debut this campaign at Hastings.
  21. No, not Covid. Although that’s back too. Mystic Journey resumes on Saturday at Caulfield in the P.B. Lawrence (a race she won last year while I was on a plane midway across the Tasman from Melbourne to Auckland). She didn’t really come up last campaign but ran a huge race at the Valley in March after a long spell and has trialled well since indicating she’s back stronger than ever. Billy Egan (Victoria’s most in form rider in recent months) has been engaged and she looks a very big chance of making in 3 out of 4 wins at Caulfield. Currently paying $4 Fixed. Good punting
  22. Ballarat Race 3 #13 Big Acheeva Currently paying $7.50 Fixed Good punting
  23. Absolutely. For a full day’s entertainment, even though they didn’t post a profit this time, it was worth it. I’m just glad they didn’t go all in on Pinatubo or Almond Eye! :)
  24. Top sport ending up winning this one Red Rum. Closing bank was $128,260 down from an opening bank of $231,100. We were a little unlucky with a few close placings. We had $27,000 on a horse at Casterton which finished 3rd. We had a $28,000 all up win bet at Belmont on Laverrod (beaten in the last bound) into Western Pride which won. Dicko has $3,000 on Romancer at Flemington @ 21 which finished a very close 3rd. On a positive note over $17,000 was raised for Fight MND charity with 2 of our bonus bets winning ($6,200) & $11,000 from Top sport.
