A new era in Victorian racing will kick off this weekend when the world’s richest mile event, the Group 1 All-Star Mile, debuts at Flemington racecourse on Saturday with a total purse of $A5 million ($US3.5 million).
In an exciting first-of-its-kind venture, Racing Victoria invited fans to vote for 10 of the 14 starters. The other four, including veteran Happy Clapper, were awarded wildcard spots and are very happy Winx’s owners decided to forgo the event.
This creates an opportunity for Happy Clapper, who ran second to the mighty mare for the fourth time in nine meetings in the recent Chipping Norton Stakes to finally escape the shadow of Australasia’s champion horse.
There is also a huge day at Sydney’s Rosehill track on Saturday where seven of the nine races are black type events. There are headed by the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m), with the supporting races being the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m), Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m), Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m), Group 3 Magic Night Stakes (1200m), Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) and Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m).
