WAIMATE’S FINAL RACE DAY

WAIMATE’S FINAL RACE DAY

The Waimate Racing Club said farewell to its idyllic racecourse yesterday, with the committee celebrating the occasion rather than feeling bitter about the decision to not be granted a race date next season for its once-a-year meeting.

“While we are still not too sure as to why we need to stop racing here and what difference it will make to the industry, we decided to focus on celebrating what we have achieved in nearly 150 years of racing here,” President Mike Cooney said.

“We invited as many of our former members and committee members as possible to the day although there are a few who couldn’t attend due to old age. I’m sure those who made it thoroughly enjoyed their day with plenty of tall tales being told along the way.
