Toby Autridge has ridden in a National but has never trained a contender.
But that could change if Tommyra plays a blinder in the Te Whangai Romney Hawke’s Bay Hurdle this Saturday.
Tommyra convinced Autridge he was worth the trip to Riccarton in August with victory in the K S Browne Hurdle at Ellerslie on Queen’s Birthday weekend.
But Autridge has kept his wallet fastened until after the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles.
If he does go ahead with the raid south, he would tick off another “must do” on his bucket list.
“It’s something I’ve had in mind for quite a while,” said Autridge.
“I rode Noble Heritage in the National Steeples in the late`1980s but the track was too hard that day.”
Tommyra will have his work cut out beating Awapuni Hurdles winner Gargarin in Saturday’s feature hurdle race at Hastings.
But Hastings will provide better footing, levelling the playing field.
Shaun Phelan will ride Tommyra on Saturday.
