The Team Hawkes-trained Spend, a $1.55 million purchase at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale when knocked down to Spendthrift Australia, prevailed by the narrowest of margins to make a winning debut at Rosehill on Saturday.
Spend, a two-year-old gelding by Snitzel, was sent out a hot favourite for the Everest Carnival Handicap (1100m) and prevailed by a head from the Chris Waller-trained True Detective.
“He didn’t seem to like the (heavy) track at all,” co-trainer Michael Hawkes said.
“It was his first day at the races and he missed a trial because they were washed out. He showed the signs of a good horse. It’s onwards and upwards with him.”
