SAVVY COUP DRAWS BARRIER FIVE IN COX

Classy New Zealand racemare Savvy Coup, pictured, will start from barrier five in Saturday’s Cox Plate, one inside champion racemare Winx.

A total of eight starters will contest the A$5m Group One race.

At today’s draw, connections of each of the runners chose their own starting position .

Darren Weir’s Kings Will Dream was the first drawn from the barrel by Racing Victoria chief steward Robert Cram and part-owner Brae Sokolski chose barrier four, against directions from the horse’s trainer.

“Weiry’s instructions to me was barrier five but I overruled him on instinct,” Sokolski said.

Saeed bin Suroor then chose barrier three for Benbati. 

Savvy Coup’s co-trainer, Matt Pitman, was second up and chose five.   Avilius was next with Godolphin’s representative Jason Walsh choosing the shortest way home, barrier one.

On Saturday, Winx will attempt to win an unrivalled fourth Cox Plate. She leapt from barrier six last year and won in brilliant fashuon
