PURTON NEEDS FIVE FOR THE RECORD

PURTON NEEDS FIVE FOR THE RECORD

A winning double by jockey Zac Purton at Happy Valley on Wednesday took his tally of wins for the season to 166 and he now needs to kick home another five at Sunday’s last day of the season at Sha Tin to surpass Joe Moreira’s record of 170.

The Australian-born Purton was sharp off the mark on Wednesday, snaring the opener, the Class 4 Kings Falcon Handicap (1000m), on the Jimmy Ting-trained Aquila. Then came a stunning ride on High Rev in race five, the Class 4 The King Handicap (1650m).

The champion jockey advanced the $2.3 favourite from second-to-last at the 800-metre mark to lead a shade past the 600-metre pole. The David Hall-trained gelding rolled on powerfully and stormed down the home straight to register an eased-down 6-3/4 length verdict.

Purton produced a sensational six win bag at Sha Tin last Sunday and will need to do something similar this weekend with a five timer required if he is to set a new benchmark.
