An impressive debut win by Subpoena in a 1200-metre two-year-old race at Te Rapa today has trainer Tony Pike already eyeing feature three-year-old races with the filly next season.
The daughter of Rip Van Winkle scored with authority, coming from equal fourth approaching the home turn to angle outside the leaders and finish off strongly for a 1-3/4 length win over race favourite Rainbow Dash and Quiz Kid.
Subpoena’s dominant performance comes just a fortnight after Pike produced the Darci Brahma filly Kali to score a stunning win in a two-year-old race at Hastings and he now has two rising stars going forward to late season two-year-old races and early three-year-old classics next season.
“She’s a beautiful scopey type of filly,” Pike said of Subpoena.
“I thought the 1200m might be a bit sharp as she is going to get better over further.
“Leith trialled both her and Kali at Matamata and couldn’t split them, so we knew she was pretty talented coming into today.
“It was a good field today as the second horse has won twice and is very smart so she (Subpoena) has a nice future ahead of her, especially as a three-year-old over further.”
Pike will take a ‘wait and see’ approach with the filly although he does have a leaning towards trying her in black-type company at Ellerslie next month.
“We mentioned if she won today, and won well, that we might look at the Futurity
at Ellerslie (Listed 1400m),” he said.
“She will tell us that going forward but she looks like a really nice, potential staying filly as a three-year-old.”
Subpeona is owned by Frontier Bloodstock and VTW Breeding Company Limited who bred the filly out of the O’Reilly mare Notice Received, who was a five race winner in Australia.
Pike and racecaller Bruce Sherwin are two of the major figures in Frontier Bloodstock, along with other close friends, and the syndicate also races Kali.
