Epsom Handicap favourite, Kiwi raider Te Akau Shark, drew 16 for the $1 million Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday. Punters went cold on him after hearing the news.
The Jamie Richards-trained galloper drew gate 16 in Tuesday’s barrier allocation and eased from $5 at the final field stage of betting to $6 and now shares the top line of betting with the John Thompson-trained Dreamforce and Chris Waller’s Kolding.
Despite drawing the outside gate in the 20 horse field, race sponsor TAB.com.au didn’t budge the quote of Dreamforce while Kolding also held firm after drawing barrier 13.
The biggest firmer since nominations were taken for the race is Cameron Handicap winner Rock. The Hawkes Racing-trained galloper was a $51 chance when nominations were declared on September 9 and post the barrier draw, the Pierro gelding is into $7.
The two other notable firmers since the market opened three weeks ago are Gem Song, $26 into $11 and Nettoyer, $51 into $26.
