Punters were finally rewarded when Monkey Shoulder prevailed in a 1400m maiden race at New Plymouth today.
The Savabeel three-year-old has always been held in high regard by trainer Allan Sharrock, who touted him as a “Derby horse” earlier this season.
However the horse, although placed on a number of occasions, hadn’t delivered the promise he had shown despite being heavily back in just about every one of his starts.
Jockey Johnathan Parkes gave Monkey Shoulder the perfect run in second place until the home turn in today’s race and then shot him clear early in the home straight.
Parkes took a couple of looks behind in the final stages to check on the opposition but victory was never in doubt and he went to the line 2 lengths clear.
Monkey Shoulder, who is owned by Waikato Stud, has now had six starts for a win, two seconds and a third and gives every impression he will improve further with time.
