Following his victory in the Listed Grand Cup (1m5¾f) at York on Saturday, trainer Ian Williams will now aim Gold Mount at the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) in November.
Having started his career in Britain with Alan King, the Excellent Art gelding was moved to Hong Kong, first with Tony Cruz and then Richard Gibson, winning for the former on three occasions.
“He joined me with the plan of running in the Melbourne Cup. Obviously prep races in Hong Kong mean it’s not easy to get a distance horse ready there,” Williams said.
“That’s where the owners would like him to run and I think we have to work back from this year’s Melbourne Cup to figure out exactly what we do between now and then. We’ve got to pick and choose our targets very well and ensure that Melbourne is where he ends up in November.”
