Verry Elleegant v Te Akau Shark – Which one would you ride in the Cox Plate because James McDonald has declared his hand.

“It was between Te Akau Shark and Verry Elleegant and I’ve gone with Verry Elleegant,” McDonald said.

Verry Elleegant being a two-time Group I winner is expected to be in the field of 14 for Australia’s weight-for-age championship when the Moonee Valley Racing Club committee decide the final field next Tuesday and McDonald says she has gone to another level since returning to Melbourne.

“She’s been a really good horse to me and she’s thriving down in Melbourne,” he said.

“She felt better in her track gallop the other day and she’s worked a lot better than she worked leading up to the Hill Stakes when she won last start.

“She hasn’t had a lot of luck this prep and she’s going to be up against it in a Cox Plate because of her racing pattern, she’s going to be out and will have to circumnavigate but I just feel she’s been a pretty good mare to me and she deserves a bit of loyalty.

“Te Akau Shark is a really nice horse but he’s been running in handicaps.

“I wish them all the best.”

Te Akau Shark is an $11 chance in the Cox Plate while Verry Elleegant is at $19.
