Major Tom’s $12 price for the New Zealand Cup is under siege after his fabulous win in the Banks Peninsula Cup today.

Within an hour of his impressive win, it had been cut already from $12 to $10.

Carrying a whopping 62.5kg, he edged roughie Taxihome.

Sam Collett settled him one off the rear and drove through the pack for a gritty win. It was her third win on the day. She also won for birthday boy Kenny Rae on Inanna earlier in the day.

Collett, pictured, said Major Tom can race fiercely – “he’s very competitive” – but settled well today.

“The 62.5 kgs made life a bit difficult but he handled it well.”.

Collett said Rae had placed the horse well in the buildup to the cup.

Rae said he was initially not going to bring Major Tom south, but after placing behind He’s Cavalier in the Ruakaka Cup (2200m) he was convinced by Michael Pitman and Noel Harris to aim him towards the New Zealand Cup.

“He has actually been in work right through winter,” Rae said. “He wasn’t going to come down.

“When he ran third behind He’s Cavalier, I thought the other horse wasn’t that good. But he’s come out and won on Wednesday and placed in a stakes race, so it’s better than I thought it was.”

Lisa Allpress  had a winning double – on Hatrick Boys and Wordofmouth….both ex-Northerners trained by Terri Rae at Riccarton.
