Promising jumper Macklemore rounded off his preparation for a two-race Australian raid at the end of this month with another good performance on the flat at today’s Hawke’s Bay meeting at Hastings.
The Edenwold seven-year-old dead-heated for fourth in a Rating 72 race over 2500m, finishing less than a length from the win.
That run followed a winning double on the flat by Macklemore, over 1800m at New Plymouth and 2050m at Wanganui within the past three weeks.
Trainer John Wheeler said the horse will now be aimed at the $A150,000 Brierly Steeplechase (3450m) at Warrnambool on April 30 with plans to see the horse back up in the $A350,000 Grand Annual Steeplechase (5500m) on the same track two days later.
“I was pretty happy with his run today because it was a step up in class from his last start,” Wheeler said.
Macklemore had three jumping starts last year for a maiden hurdle win over 3000m at Wanganui and a second in a maiden steeplechase over 3500m at Te Aroha.
