Tough and durable stayer Libran was euthanised on Tuesday after suffering a fatal injury in Queensland.
The Chris Waller-trained gelding broke down while working at the Gold Coast in preparation for Saturday’s Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m).
Owned by Highclere Thoroughbred Racing Australia, Libran arrived in Australia a five time winner from 12 UK starts in 2015 and has been a regular stakes performer over the past four seasons.
His four Australian wins all came in black-type company with his biggest victory coming in the 2016 Group 1 Chairman’s Handicap ( 2600m) the week before he finished second to Gallante in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m).
Libran’s career ended with nine wins and nine placings from 44 starts with prize-money earnings of over $1.4 million.
