John Jenkins labels his Six Top bets for this weekend’s race meetings
TAURANGA, SATURDAY, 23/3/19
Race 2, 1.13pm
3 Honneur Noir
A lightly raced five-year-old who has recorded four wins and three minor placings from only 11 starts and looks well placed in a Rating 82 race after winning at Rating 85 level last year. Forget the last start failure on a puggy track at Otaki and she will have a tongue-tie added to her gear.
Race 6, 3.35pm
A highly promising stayer who is coming off a strong last start win over 2200m at Otaki. Has not raced for a month but performs well when his races are spaced and the drop back to 2000m here looks ideal. Has performed well on the Tauranga track in the past and he is using this race as a lead up to the Hawke’s Bay Cup.
Race 7, 4.15pm
A class galloper who has won nine of his 28 starts and been Group 1 placed. Needed the run and was unsuited by slow track conditions when 2nd over 1600m at Trentham last start and trainer says he has improved significantly since. The blinkers will be removed and he didn’t have them on when he won his last race.
ROSEHILL, SATURDAY, 23/3/19
Race 1, 2.30pm
5 Sweet Scandal
A promising four-year-old from the powerful Chris Waller stable who has recorded five wins and two 2nds from 11 starts. Did remarkably well to stick on for 4th over 1200m at Randwick last start after racing three-wide on the speed. Gets a significant jockey change here and is a past winner on the Rosehill track.
Race 9, 7.45pm
3 All Too Soon
A talented mare who was placed in strong stakes races last year. Resumed from a spell with a good 2nd over 1500m on this track last month and then found track conditions too firm when only 7th over 1600m at Randwick. Gets back on her home track here and is likely to get slow track conditions to suit.
MORNINGTON, SATURDAY, 23/3/19
Race 8, 6.50pm
10 Manolo Blahniq
Formerly trained in New Zealand and has strung together several good performances since joining the Tony Noonan stable on this track. Beat a good field when winning over 1400m at Flemington two starts back and then finished 2nd over 1400 at Caulfield. Freshened for this and has been placed in a recent 800m trial.
