Hugh Bowman will have to weave all his magic on the favourite for Saturday’s $2 million Caulfield Guineas after his mount Dalasan drew a horror barrier.
There are 16 runners plus three emergencies for the Group 1 classic after final acceptances on Tuesday morning and Dalasan could barely have come up with a worse number, drawing gate 18.
In a controversial move, Bowman replaced Dalasan’s regular rider Raquel Clark for the race after Dalasan failed to run down Alligator Blood in the Guineas Prelude.
The unbeaten Alligator Blood did not fare much better, coming up with barrier 14 while another of the favourites, Kubrick, drew alongside Dalasan in gate 17.
The barrier draws were conducted for the Caulfield Guineas, Thousand Guineas and Schillaci Stakes on Tuesday with final acceptances and barrier draws for the other seven events on Saturday to be taken on Wednesday morning.
Bowman’s mount in the Thousand Guineas drew a lot better, with Godolphin’s even-money favourite Flit to jump from barrier two of 11.
