Apologies for not submitting any selections yesterday. Down south with the brother in law and his family and it was a bit mad yesterday.

In the best traditions of after timing, five winners from ten selections but on level stakes just about broke even.

Anyway, as someone once said “yesterday’s gone and now all I want is a smile” 😊

Gore stages a ten race card and if you want competitive racing, once again the provincial South Island is your friend. There seem a lot of horses and few opportunities - the argument for extra South Island country fixtures looks irrefutable to this observer but as seems to be the case, does anyone in NZTR know or understand? I expect there will be a decent crowd and a good holiday atmosphere down there and good luck to the club.

Four to avoid like a cheap tribute band:

12.28: RED MOON RISING

1.03:  TIKKI

1.36:  INTERCEPT

4.03:  PIVOTAL TEN

Nothing very original here but I presume those drawn out with the picnic people are going to struggle. The Gore Guineas looks a decent race and PIVOTAL TEN looks the form horse , albeit facing some unexposed types coming off maiden wins on the west coast circuit early in January. I don’t know the extent to which the Omoto, Reefton and Kumara transfers beyond that circuit in terms of quality. That’s not to disparage such form - someone will tell me a future Group 1 winner started life winning a Hokitika maiden back in the day - but it’s not easy for this observer to quantify the strength of that form even within South Island country racing.

No great shakes at Gore but a couple of interest…

R5 Xrated $5 - ran on well last start

R6 The Immigrant $9 - consistent

R7 Caledonie $17 - best North form right in this, Kate H might help.

R8 Pivotal Ten $3 and Airpark Hustler $16

Decent ground at Gore as it turned out.

CHUPALLA did a passable imitation of ARAZI’s Breeders Cup Juvenile run slicing through the field and travelling strongly but found little in the straight albeit keeping on well for second. This was her first run on decent ground and showed a big form improvement. BONSAI BOB flew home for fourth - he hadn’t shown much but it was an eye catching finish.

TIKKI continued her upward trajectory in the third and is another to follow over 1209m on decent turf.

SEFTON was the clear winner of the R65 over 2000m. He possibly found Riccarton company too warm last time but back among the country horses he was very good.

PIVOTAL TEN was an impressive winner of the Gore Guineas doing it from the front and clearing way from some unexposed types. This was her second Listed win having won at Wingatui on Boxing Day. The dam was an unraced mare trained in Britain by William Jarvis and was herself by Pivotal so you’d think she would prefer slow ground but she looked really good on today’s decent ground. Not sure where they will go with her but it will have to be to a metropolitan track.

Nope. Plan is for her to stay down there. Listed ILT Ascot Park Hotel Southland Guineas (1400m), run at Ascot Park on February 15. next.

Yes the firmer ground upset a few, suited Sefton who had raced well in the NI. Caledonie disappointing again, needs it wetter to find form.

Pivotal Ten was impressive as you say, will be going for the Guineas triple crown in a couple of weeks.

Airpark Hustler got too far back and ran on well for 4th at only his second start.

Well done Colin W, you certainly have a good one.
You must be really pleased with the stakes available at the moment.
Wish I was getting a bigger share of them.

Looking ahead to the Waitangi Day meeting at Tauherenikau which should attract a very decent crowd.

A competitive card and some early thoughts hoping the ground will dry out a bit from the reported Soft 6.

12.38: FELUCCA

1.10:  SHAMELESS STAR

2.52:  FINEST HOUR

4.38:  SONATA

It’s all my fault, apparently.

Been following a horse called matador, big run yesterday out of his grade, and caught three wide the trip, only downside a tough run, and the divvy probably gone for next time.

craig  is a nice rider in NZ but if he went overseas he would probably  be a laughing stock imho,, they wouldnt tolerate the handbrake leading tactics.[  i like Alaskan tomorrow against Leica Lucy, we witnessed today when jazzy got cold on Kaimai Warrior on a rails bias early of the  potential with the talented fav not making ground in the run home behind the Derby nominated but with no chance without favours  Grey Area ....Tauranga is a joke , its always unfair and should of been removed before  Paeroa got lost to the Developers....bullshit....this game is full of bullshit tracks and piss poor rides with no  integrity unit  to be seen......At least greyhounds try every time they jump.... if you cant tell if your jockey is trying you need a good kick up the ass

As we say where I come from - well, quite.

I’ve commented before on the differences between the tempo of NZ and UK racing. This thing about breaking fast from the gates, getting to the front and then stacking up the other runners before kicking for home - I’m not saying it doesn’t happen in the UK but I think our longer straights mitigate against it. At a Doncaster or Newbury where the straight is 800m, you couldn’t do it, the others have time to get position and challenge. UK racing is generally run at a more even tempo unlike US racing where they go hard from the start or French racing where they crawl and then sprint.

World class jockeys can both adapt and evolve as they gain experience in other jurisdictions - I think both Kevin Stott and George Rooke have shown what they have learned riding in the UK can be of huge benefit.

I think you'll find these two guys are simply levels above most of our jockeys . They could do well in most jurisdictions in the world .

Most of our home grown jockeys would starve if they had to make their living outside of NZ .

On to today’s action and to be fair there’s something for everyone with a strong quality card at Te Rapa and a distinctly competitive set of races at Wingatui. A chance to have a little analysis time overlooking the Tasman this morning has yielded the following options.

Te Rapa:

1.03: DETAIN

2.10: LEICA LUCY

3.28: LADIES MAN

4.03: BOURBON PROOF

4.38: GRAIL SEEKER

5.12: RAYET

Wingatui:

12.45: BELARDO ACE

1.18: HAKADECREE

3.35: MAYOR OF NORWOOD

I know @Gruffwill be taking on LEICA LUCY with ALASKAN and from a punting point of view I completely respect that. LEICA LUCY does have the form and she was very good last time but in a field of lightly raced and unexposed fillies it’s possible one of the others could improve past her. Taking 9.50 on ALASKAN is a sporting punt unless you’re the kind of big player who is happy taking 1.6 on the favourite.

Savaglee different kettle of fish today I don't think can win in that field . I like Luberon but what a shocking draw . If they go hard and get a tow into it would love to see him win

Yeah I'm not convinced by Savaglee , hasn't really beaten anything in my book and never run great time . Next couple of starts might prove me wrong .

Good racing today all over the place..

Te Rapa

R5 Risque Ruler in great form, Our Time backed.

R6 La Crique short at $2.70..Sharp n’ Smart might improve here at this trip $19

R7 Interested to see how Carisbrooke Castle goes here.Stable is pushing on $34

R8 Looks like Grail Seeker but best run will win. Aussie not here for the scenery.

R9 Inspired by Art the smokey. December the obvious.

Wingatui

R8 Interested to see King of the Castle back from Oz to original stable. Well up to these but better second up $13

Caulfield

R8 Old Munhamek looks ready to win again....meets the two who beat it last time 5 and 5.5kg better off -  $7.50 good value

R9 Mr Brightside expected to win but short. Maher pair Another Wil and Southport Tycoon expected to go well.

Savaglee’s Guineas win came in a sizzling time of 1:33.86 – the third-fastest recorded in the race. It was beaten only by Xtravagant’s 1:33.59 in 2015 and Ugo Foscolo’s 1:33.81 a year later.

Yeah but Riccarton is always fast at the cup meeting , I never take notice of the times there , look at what he beat , terrible field and not one of the beaten horses has put in a decent run since ,

I said I'm not convinced , yet , happy to be proven wrong .

Only having one bet today , Inspired by Art , very impressive winning fresh up back in November , ran great sectionals .

Only issue is the stable and rider aren't going great .

Former Derby winner Astrix is racing at Randwick race 9 number 1, a couple of Aussie tipsters have it in their picks, currently at $71 and $13, they said it has trialed well. Now in the Waller stable.
