Pukekohe - Sunday 08 January

There are several in the R3 Maiden 1600m @ Pukekohe today who have done enough to say they can win.
One such runner is my tip for today :-

image.thumb.png.567c070eb71b043b3f11363822aeb635.png

Locally trained galloper in the 7th line of Favouritism @ $13.00 ; $4.00 with an in-form Sam Spratt on board. Will get back from the 9 draw but be finishing strongly.

Just as an aside, there is a runner in this R3 named 'Styx', trained by Andrew Forsman.
In the mid to late 1960s when in my childhood my favourite galloper was also named Styx. By Syntax, this horse won 9 of 40 starts for northern trainer George Smith, with its best win being the 1967 Foxbridge Plate when ridden by Ron Taylor.
When I first came onto this site must be close on 20 years ago my moniker was 'Styxmyfavourite.'
I'll be interested to see how the modern version of 'Styx' gets on. Won't be carrying any of my money today, though.

Pukekohe:

Race 1: #2 Farravallo

Race 2: #8 Tarted Up - Tough winner on a testing track at Tauranga 2 starts ago. Stepped up in grade against the older horses and ran on in a race difficult to. Back to 1200m a slight niggle but with the long straight of Pukekohe to wind up $14 seems a decent gamble.

Race 3: #3 Star Of Wonder - Locally prepared horse, who has had 3 good runs this campaign. Tidy work from the rear 2 back at Avondale, the came raging home last start to just miss, S Spratt on who can hopefully position him one of the rail and come with a strong run like last time. $13

Race 4: #8 Sealed With A Kiss - The progeny of Tarzino need ground and although he is stepping back to 1500m he looks a strong winning chance. Three wide with no cover last time in a Group 3 and to be honest wasn't given my chance by O Bosson (which we don't get to say very often), in addition to that he was also 1200 - 1600m which is a big step up for a horse only having it's second start. Tidy field btu not Group 3 level and can atone last start's performance. Trialed up well right handed too. $13

Race 5: #3 Loosepender - Sat 3 wide on debut and still won drawing away on and after the line, second start so untapped and is bred to appreciate getting over ground.$12

Race 5: #7 Highly Vindicated

Race 6: #13 Lady Maroal

Race 7: #3 Uderzo

I know it's Greyhounds but Earnestness in the first at Manakau for the great Mike and Linda Martin.

Picnic races today at Motukarara. Might be some trotting fans at the Cafe , and you get to see the 'Best there's ever Been' attending the Picnic today.!! How cool for the locals !

Mark Purdon , (now training with his son Nathan for the first time through 2023)  should go very very close to the 20-1 Treble.

Race 7  LUMEN CAELI   -  Race 8  CHAMBRAY  -  Race 10  Wy Fi  (Marks owns part of himself and going well now)

Best of luck to everyone's tips today.

from memory STYX was often ridden by Chris Underhill.

I like Mazzolino in R4 for a bit of each way value   $7.50 and $2.20 on FF so maybe a 2/3 bet

Nicely bred - Savabeel out of Posy (a full sister to Daffodil). Posy also the dam of Atishu.

Ran a very nice second behind Wild Night in early December (finished ahead of race rival Denby Road) and then not so good on Boxing Day - willing to put that one down to the good track - appears to like a little bit of sting out of the track.

G'day,crustyngrizzly ! 🙂

I don't know about total rides, but I do know that in respect to the 9 races that 'Styx' won, these were the jockeys and number of wins for each :-

> NB (Norm) Holland       6
> RW (Ron)   Taylor          1
> BF (Brian) Andrews      1
> C  (Colin ?) Underhill    1

I remember racing to the local dairy after school, each Thursday it would have been, to buy a Best Bets so that I could see if Styx would be racing on the Saturday. 😁
