goldcape 43 Report post Posted August 5, 2022 Flat racing on day two of the three day Grand National carnival conducted on the synthetic looks like a benefit for South Island trainers. Kevin Myers doesn't have a horse nominated for flat racing on Wednesday. Myers took three of his team to Cambridge on Wednesday and I hoped that one or two of them would race again on Wednesday after having their first feel of a synthetic track. Myers is a big supporter of Riccarton racing and southern carnival racing in general and once Awapuni's synthetic is available for meetings he will likely have horses racing on the Riccarton synthetic in the future. However you have to feel he has been hard done by with recent decisions to rationalize the industry. The West Coast circuit is no longer what it once was. The two day Blenheim meetings are gone along with the summers East Coast (north Is) meetings. These two and three day carnival type meetings gave Myers owners the opportunity to win a race or two when other options for success weren't likely. They were also an opportunity for his up and coming apprentices to get some valuable race day experience in a more relaxed environment. I'm sure if Kevin was a younger man he too would be seriously considering relocating across the Tasman. NZ racing can't afford to lose horseman of his calibre. Well said, although as the previous NZTR CEO said about another trainer, "he won't be missed". Plenty of others to take his place apparently.
