4 Week Comp - how it will work (but not an entry thread)

Recommended Posts

This is not an entry thread - that will appear tomorrow night once the fields for Saturday are confirmed.

For the next four weeks we will do something a little bit the same and a little bit different.

Part A (the same):  We will run a one day comp for each of the next four Saturdays - format we've used recently - two horses per race, two best bets, points earned based on dividend bands.   Weekly winners earn a $20 bet - four weeks, four winners.  Highest aggregate points over the four weeks also wins a $20 bet.

Part B (different):  We will use the same picks and scores from Part A to run in parallel a knockout/play-off type comp:

- Week 1 (Sat 30 April) will be a seeding round - scores earned in week 1 will determine seedings for the first knockout round.

- Week 2 (Sat 7 May) will be the first knockout round.  You will be placed into a match with three others depending on your seeding.  16 matches with up to 4 players per match, means a maximum of 64 players make the knockout comp.  I doubt we'll get 64 in the seeding round, but if we get more, then only the top 64 seeded players make the cut - the others can still play in the Part A comp each week.  If we get less than 64 entrants then some matches will only have three players in them.

- Week 3 (Sat 14 May) - semi-finals day - the winners of the 16 matches in week 2 will progress to the Championship semi-finals where they will play in four matches of 4 players.  Winners of these four matches will proceed to the Championship Final.   To keep more people in the play-off hunt we will also have a Plate competition involving the 16 people who finished second in the week 2 matches.

- Week 4 (Sat 21 May - Doomben Cup day) - Grand Finals day - four winners of the Championship semi-finals will play in the Championship final and the four winners of the Plate semi-finals will play in the Plate final.  Highest score wins!

In the event of ties in week 2, week 3 (semis) and week 4 (finals) the winner will be the higher seeded player - this makes the seedings count for something more than just the match draws.

Sounds complicated, but actually pretty simple - you just enter your picks each week and we'll take care of the seedings, draw, etc... (and spell that all out up front).  Running it with four player matches rather two player H2H's helps to reduce the number of play-off rounds.

Knock-out/Play-off prizes - $200 worth of bets (once again thank you Scooby).   $150 to the Championship winner and $50 to the Plate winner.   As always collects from bets will be split 50% to the entrant and 50% recycled into future comps.

For week 2 of the knockout comp, the seeds from week 1 will be placed into 16 matches of four as follows.

If for example we only get 56 entries in the seeding round then matches A to H will only have three players in them.   If we get less than 48 entries then some matches will only have two players.   Will accept walk-ups in week 2 for the knockout comp if there are less than 64 entries in week 1.

and in week 3 the semi-finals will be made up of the winners (or runners-up for the plate) of the following matches from week 2

In week 2 we will also determine the best 3rd place getters (based on points earned in week 2) to be on standby in case any of the 32 semi-finalists don't post in week 3.

and finally ties in the seeding round will be split by (in this order):

- most winners
- most 2nd placings
- most 3rd placings
- best placing in Race 1
- best placing of second pick in Race 1
- best placing in Race 2
- best placing of second pick in Race 2
- etc .........

(best placing includes runners outside of first 3 - for example, someone with the 3rd and 6th horses in Race 1 wins a tiebreaker with someone with 3rd and 8th in Race 1)
