Next steps for Racing under Red

NZTR
24 January 2022

NZTR has met with clubs, the Racing Integrity Board, the Jockeys’ Association, and other stakeholders to determine the next steps for racing under Red in the Covid Traffic Light System.

The key focus has been to ensure our participants, especially our jockeys, are provided every level of protection to allow racing to continue.  It has been agreed with the Jockeys’ Association that for the next 14 days jockeys will remain in the Island in which they normally live to allow separate bubbles to be maintained.

At this stage the Matamata RC and Hawkes Bay Racing Inc meetings on Wednesday and Thursday respectively, will be conducted as closed-door meetings.  Trials will also be conducted behind closed doors.

The Wellington RC meeting will hold its Wellington Cup meeting on Saturday with limited groups spread across the course and well-separated from industry participants.

NZTR will support individual clubs making the decision regarding whether they will cater for groups of 100, or whether they will operate closed door meetings.

At meetings where groups of 100 can attend protocols will include the following:

  • Vaccination passes will be required.
  • Masks must be worn, and people must remain seated with table service provided.
  • No mingling of groups is permitted.

Updated NZTR Protocols will be published on the website tomorrow and updates provided to clubs and the individual Sector groups.

It is vital that all of us understand to ensure we keep racing going we all need to respect the protocols put in place, as they are there with the best interests of the entire industry.  NZTR is aware there are varying views but on balance, for now, this is the best way forward.

That’s all a big tick from me, entirely sensible.

If you believe anything this government is saying and has said you live a very sheltered life or have serious comorbidities, believing you can be saved by restrictions around this mire of misinformation. Two Shots for freedom was the catch cry, utter tripe

What do call a Closed door meeting. Can Owners attend?

Only if you sneak in under a heavy disguise......look thru a fence or view from a nearby Carpark. We had these for months ! No body except essential workers!

It seems the Clubs will be able to decide what's best for them...how they organise within the rules of having Groups up to 100.

Like Ellerslie did for Boxing day ....owners and members only were allowed to pre-register , and book a spot in one of the allocated areas.

I want to go to Ellerslie trials Friday as an Owner. I will phone them.

Sometimes it can be better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.

A good safe place to watch is the Hospital car park !

No show. Can't you read? "Trials will also be conducted behind closed doors."

That means essential staff only.

Good afternoon

As you will know, New Zealand moved to the COVID-19 Protection Framework 'Red' setting yesterday (Monday 24 January 2022).

Due to the short time-frame between then and Sunday's Anniversary Weekend meeting at Ellerslie, the decision has been made to restrict entry to this raceday to:

  • Those owners who have horses racing
    • Owners will be emailed by the Club tomorrow afternoon with an outline of entry conditions that will include an RSVP requirement. Owners will also be asked to come on course just to watch their horse(s) race from their nominated room, then depart immediately after
  • Plus those in critical roles that allow a race meeting to go ahead

We understand that some members may find this decision disappointing.  However, we also hope you will appreciate that doing our part to ensure the health and safety of our industry so that racing may continue in these times is of the utmost importance to us.

Please note that members who have a horse racing on the day are able to still attend in the capacity of an owner.

Updates regarding the scheduled meetings at Ellerslie and Pukekohe Park in February and March will be issued at a later date.

In the meantime, the Club websites are the best source for information as it becomes available.

There certainly has been a few changes along they way, as stated even, from freezer storage temperatures then the two shots for summer, then the time between jabs, now the on going boosters, and let's not forget all the bribes along the way, money, KFC, ice cream, the early participants got a free water, all the young ones got promised a summer and their concerts, most of which that were cancelled, certainly been a challenge, not to mention on going side effects some are having, interesting world we live in.

Beers with a mate who has an eighth share in three horses.

"I've had a huge amount of fun with my mates with the horses over a number of years.  It's been worth the huge cost.  BUT, with these changes I will give very serious thought to whether I take a share in another horse if us mates can't get on the piss with one another when a horse runs."

I had travel arranged so enough notice to make serious adjustments.

Obviously each club making its own decision whether to take the cautious approach or the super cautious approach.

So before the fields declared I know I can get into Trentham , a couple of options available there if I promptly register.

Only owners allowed at Ellerslie....sorry no members.....so if the horse racing ,I will be able to register to attend BUT only welcome for that one race and will be escorted off property after the race.

Only the keenos will attend.

Seems extreme but obviously a real concern that the contagious variant will reach the key folk ,the jockeys , and bring things to a complete standstill.

Of course they can get on the piss together - but possibly not on a race track for a month or three (depending on the track to. I have been on track at Addington and Riccarton to see horses run. The detail will get worked out. Don't think this is enough to give the game up surely ?
